Canon40D won't fire up

This Canon 40D has been in the closet for 3-4 years...stored in a camera bag...with no battery or card in it. I tried using it and it won;t even fire up/ Tried charged older batteries and a new third party battery. I have read that the date/time battery in the battery door can cause this, but this camera has abattery grip and the original battery door was removed. It belojged to my son, who passed away, so I do't know if he kept the old door or not, but it was working with this setup at one time. Any ideas on what to check?>. I want to pass this down to my grandson (his son).

Even with a battery grip, the date/time battery (a CR2016 lithium battery) will still be installed in the camera. You can follow this guide to replace the date/time battery. You'll just need to remove the battery grip first and then you can skip straight to step 3.

It also appears that the battery grip has a built in slot for the battery door to be store while it's in use, so it's likely that's where the battery door is being stored. If you remove the battery grip from the camera, you should be able to find the battery door tucked away on the side of the part of the battery grip that goes into the camera (the part marked in red in the image below).

Let me know if you have anymore questions about any of this, or if replacing the date/time battery doesn't solve the issue for you.

Thanks! I found the date/time battery and put a new one in, but it didn’t help. So I put the old one back in, thinking the body was done for. But the next day I tried another new BP511 battery and it started working! Then it also worked on a second BP511 battery! Who knows what’s going on!

One other thing is the exposure compensation feature doesn’t seem to be working….it’s set on -2/3 f stop and I can’t get it to change. Any ideas?

@lamarmay I'm not sure if the battery is just for the date/time or if it's also responsible for keeping all of the camera settings too, so maybe in the process of replacing it you caused the camera to do a reset or something? In any case, I'm glad it's working now.

If you go to the menu, you should fine a setting marked something like "Expo.comp./AEB". If you select that, you should be able to change it back to 0
