Issue with a replaced right Joystick

Hello, I tried replacing my joystick since it had stick drift and, since it's my first time, I did very poorly and it seems like I ripped off a part of the motherboard (as can be seen in the first picture).

Since then, I tried my controller on hardwaretester and found 3 strange things :⏎

1) The controller doesn't register up-and-down movement (I'm not touching anything) (2nd picture)

2) The right joystick seems to be - partly - responsive to the left joystick (3rd picture) (the right joystick isn't pressed)

3) When I touch the motherboard at some specific points, the right joystick seems to register chaotic data depending on where the pressions were made.

I don't know what to do and what the options are since I haven't found anything on the internet, any help would be greatly appreciated !

Unfortunately, it looks like there was a lot of collateral damage during the repair. This may be fixable but it may be easier to replace the whole controller at this point. I'll try to highlight it in the image below:

Block Image
  • (Red): Electrical traces that have been lifted up / ripped off the board
  • (Orange): A component that may have been knocked off during the soldering
  • (Yellow): Misc. damage to traces, pads, and vias

The prognosis isn't great, but soldering is hard and takes lots of practice to master. I would look at this this like a learning experience.

Hey! Thanks for the answer.

I know the job wasn't done greatly and that it will get better with time and experience but do you have any idea on how I could repair the faulty parts/points mentioned in your answer ?

Kind Regards.

Hi Tendos!

You need to repair the traces (which is very hard). Also, you need to get a new component there highlighted in orange. Plus, you need to fix the solder pads there. I agree with @chrisgreen, it's for the best to buy a new controller in this case. It's very hard to repair all of this and it's (in my opinion) not worth to repair this controller anymore. Still, if you want to repair the controller, then you do need to start with fixing the traces.

Hi! Yes could be possible. Could also be that an incompatible joystick is soldered in. I recommend to replace it for the "Hall Effect" joysticks (just be sure you use the right one for the PS5 Dual Sense controller).
