The Nokia Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) are designed to deliver superior triple play services with high bandwidth capacity to the end-users. It is available in different options with different types of user interfaces to suit all network needs.

Remotely 'locked out' of my router/modem - can't access config anymore

So I have this Nokia router/modem to access my fibre optics internet but recently the provider decided to change something and the modem part of my device doesn't work anymore.

They did sent a modem but it won't work separately - now I have to plug the new modem into my Nokia device so I can have internet access.

And it works but both devices are huge, I live in a very small place and regardless if I could have internet with just one device before it doesn't make sense to me that now I have to have two devices to do the job of one.

This is what says on its manual:

"Integrates the ONT and wireless access point functions to allow one less device in the home"

Anyways I wanted to copy the config from the new modem into my Nokia device - keep in mind the Nokia works as both modem and router but now has been 'locked' to work just as a router.

But I can't access the Nokia config anymore as it was remotely 'locked'. I used to use an IP address for it but it doesn't work anymore. I even tried a hard reset but still no joy.

Any ideas in how to remove this 'lock' so I can access the device's config like I used to?

I suggest contacting your Internet provider's support.

@aactech they are not very interested in helping. Turns out they charge a fee to 'rent' the new modem. Which should be illegal if you ask me…

For other's information:

The Nokia XS-250WX-A is a Nokia Optical Network Terminal (ONT).

  • An ONT is an Optical Network Terminal which is a device that converts the fibre optical cable signal, that comes into your house, to a digital signal, that a Managed Network router can understand.
  • It is still commonly called a "modem", as this was what the old ADSL phone line Internet connections were made on. ONT is the correct term. Good we have that out of the way. 😎
  • LAN ports - This model has Four 1000Base -TX Ethernet ports (RJ-45) and one 10 G Base-T Ethernet interface as well as Wi-Fi. It also has old telephone POTS ports.
  • The factory "Default Gateway" address of this router is 192.168.1.254.

Hi Carlos, What does ipconfig bring up for the default gateway when you run it from CMD? Perhaps try some of the more advanced switches for ipconfig?

If that does not work what about using a program like NetworkView or Slitheris Network Discovery - both have freeware modes for the basics. See what comes up. You network must be seeing the ONT somewhere.

"They" may have just changed the ip address of the ONT? So who is doing it Chorus or your ISP? Who sent the TP-link device?

Unfortunately I think your post

"Because when we first came out with Hyperfibre, modem/routers capable of supporting those speeds were few and far between, Chorus decided to supply an ONT with built in router capabilities. That service however is getting grandfathered and so the XS-250WX-A will just become a regular ONT like with any other Fibre connection.

The XS-250WX-A is a modem yes. It is the RGW or 'router' capabilities we are no longer supporting. This will be supplied and supported by your broadband provider of choice and so long as its setup correctly you will experience no loss in BANDWIDTH. CAT 6a is capable of 10 gigabits per second, far in excess of the 8 gigabits per second you get with a Hyperfibre plan.

Because RGW services are no longer required we are also turning off the remote management website and API's that allowed this functionality, which is in line with all our other ONT types. I believe THAT is the functionality I want back…"

answers your question. Serious hacking would be required.

Have you tested all your CAT cables? I have had serious problems with these in the past. The annoying thing is that that they can still "work" when badly connected but just NOT very well.

As far as I know 1Gbps ports can't communicate with 10 Gbps ports.

To be fair it is indeed quite hard to find information on this particular device and some links give you a PDF download wit A LOT of information that even I cannot be bothered reading it all…

Those were the 2 links I could find that were not overload with information (one being slightly biased since it comes from the company refusing to help):

https://www.chorus.co.nz/help/ont/hyperf...

https://www.lightwirebusiness.com/blog/t...

But point being: I had it for over 2 years, I did not need anything else ever and then they decided that from September onwards I would need to have a dedicated modem to have my internet going. One that I might add keeps dropping the signal every 30min or so meaning I cant do my remote backup anymore (and thats only the major issue but not the only one by far!)

This being the device they are making me use:

https://www.tp-link.com/sg/service-provi...

Remember: I cant use either or, I MUST use both or no internet for me

Oh and no, I cannot use the default gateway anymore. That's what's being disabled since they pushed the use of this other device and that's what I am trying to go around so I can access my Nokia again and try to reconfigure it with the other device's settings.

But I been thinking and I reckon the reason they are locking me out and not telling why could be because I could get access to change the speed of my connection - mine is the second fastest available so they might be wary that I would change to the actual fastest available which to be honest I don't even need as I'm not doing anything spectacular with it - just hate regular ADSL cause it can freeze my streaming when I'm also downloading something in my computer which doesn't happen with fibre

A few excerpts after a looong chat with one of the companies:

Hi @carlosferrari I rewrote my "Answer" above as first time I read "Modem/Router" (you know like ADSL) and did not look to the right and see that is was ONT/Router that you have. We all do it but terms are so loosely used these days!

@aactech the default gateway is what they locked/changed. That's what I used to setup my personal config 2 years ago but now Chorus disabled it.

The ISP was the one who sent me the TP-Link.

My computer is an iMac would there be NetworkView or Slitheris Network Discovery for Macs?

If those do not work I been thinking about opening the Nokia device and see if I can find something that would indicate another way to access its config - I dunno, like a backdoor connection or something (unlikely)

Or perhaps even a proper hard reset, something different and 'deeper' than the reset button we access from the outside.

Basically throwing things at the wall to see if something sticks - before actually throwing the device at the wall :P

Some ISP's will block modems from accessing their network based on the MAC Address, it could be that your modem is not allowing any connections until it has connected to the ISP's services?
Potentially the setting (If it exists) for mac address mirroring got disabled because of the update?
Most ISP's will allow usage of your own modem but it would need to be manually enabled.

Not sure… I was allowed to access the device through its IP address (192.168.1.254) but now I cannot do that anymore. Every time I try I end up on one of those 404 dead pages.

But point being: I had it for over 2 years, I did not need anything else ever other that this one ( https://www.chorus.co.nz/help/ont/hyperf... ) and then they decided that from September onwards I would need to have a dedicated modem to have my internet going. That is actually very important information, if the device keeps giving you 404's it'd mean that it isn't specifically due to the ISP, but more particularly the modem itself.

Based on [this pdf that I found](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=w...), you should be seeing a sign in page on the page you are trying to access.

When you nagivate to that page on a different web-browser or device, do you see the sign-in page?

完成的

As mentioned in the comments above Chorus locked/disabled the factory gateway access so now I cannot access the config sign-in page (goes to 404)

I might try opening the Nokia device over the weekend to see if I can find a way to do a proper hard reset inside, something different and 'deeper' than the reset button we access from the outside.

@axodouble can't find it with the IP scanners. All they show is the TP-Link device.

Could you elaborate on how you currently have your network configured?

It is unclear to me how it is currently set up, IE:

Nokia Router -> TP-Link Device -> Laptop

Or:

TP-Link Device -> Nokia Router -> Laptop

Etc.

With that then I would get a better understanding on how you have connected your network.
