Can't for the sake of it, make the zif connector stay latched

hello, hoping someone can help shed a light on this or give me a tip

I disassembled a macbook pro mid 2012 per the site instructions.. now I've disassembled other systems before, and when I saw it had a ZIF connector I was like.. oh hello darkness my old friend.. since these have always been troublesome for me (I think I broke it in the first laptop I ever disassembled, so obviously I had a lot of care unlatching it and disconnecting the cable.

everything went fine until I tried to reassemble it. I can't, for the sake of it.. get the connector far enough, the socket is unlatched so it's not that, I tried latching it anyway but, obviously, the cable didn't stay put.. so I'm at a loss here.. and I'm starting to bend the cable corners, so I'm not going to try it anymore until I get a guiding voice. correct me if I'm wrong but I think the white stripe should line up with the white dots alongside the connector. I've attached a picture, I can't get it further than that..

I have a another macbook pro case (the donor) and I tried to connect the connector into the defective mainboard, just to try it out and I'm having the same problem.

Then at the end I dissasembled the whole thing and tried to connect it at an angle.. yes it does get in and gets latched that way, but then there is no way you can place the motherboard again without breaking the connector.

I've tried the electrical tape trick that is mentioned in a thread around here, but the tape doesn't glue into the cable either.. so I don't know what to do

This is hard to make a recommendation for—if the cable isn't inserting into the connector properly then there is probably some subtle blockage or damage inside the connector. The only thing I could recommend it continuing to try to insert the cable carefully in different ways until it is fully inserted. Good luck!

it does get in if I detach the motherboard and push the motherboard against the cable.. it gets in.. I can latch it.. `problem is that with the cable connected then it is impossible to get the motherboard where it has to seat inside the case without probably breaking the conector or/and the cable. and when the motherboards sits where it has to.. then I can't get the cable in.

It's tricky to insert that cable due to the lack of space—normally I use something like the flat end of a black stick/spudger to push it into place. Good luck!

You need to use some stronger tape on the connector, I usually attach the tape before I inset into the board as to get the tape with maximum grip (You can leave the tape attached it won't affect anything), the trick is to get the cable into the connector then to hold it there with another finger while pulling it but not to hard as to bend the cable, wiggle it side to side until the lines on the cable are parallel with the connector. It will go in and you should then be able to clip down the latch. Check that the latch is open (Up position) before trying to insert the cable!. Do check the cable 1st though to see if any small part is missing (or bent) as mentioned above by Zach as this could be blacking the channel..... (We answered at the same time!)

yup as I mentioned the cable started to bend.. still when I inserted it with the motherboard in another position (detached from the case) it got in and I was able to latch it.. so I guess something like the angle isn't right.. going to try with a different kind of tape.. because the issue, I'm guessing, is the angle and how much force can be applied when in the right angle, with the motherboard detached I can just push it against the cable and it works.. but that's impossible once the motherboard is in place

@ryoga This can be a tricky one to reinstall, been there loads of times, I found holding down the cable with your thumb while pulling it into position with the tape works for me, just be careful not to push on the opened latch while pulling it in, it should go in eventually.... I use around 5-6 cm of tape sticking about 3cm of the tape to the cable then fold back the remaining tape on itself to create a kind of pull handle.

EDIT: Forgot to add, make sure that the cable is partly in before pushing and pulling as to avoid bending the cable pins!

yes I guess that makes sense.. I might have to press it down but if I press it down I can't, at the same time, press it against the connector into position, so the tape helps to do both.. now let me find what kind of tape I have that I can use and that can withstand me pulling it without getting "unglued"

@ryoga I use regular double sided tape (Not the best but it does the job for me). Just fold it back on itself to leave something that you can hold onto and gently pull. Be careful not to bend the cables pins as then it becomes more difficult and can result in some keys not working.... be patient, gentle and good luck!

@livfe Yeah I was able to do it , sadly it seems the donor logic board isn't working either

@ryoga - Wait a sec here! Is the keyboard ribbon connector as seen here the one you are having an issue with?

Your image is hard to see things but I do believe the logic board connector is damaged!

If you review Step 11 in this guide MacBook Pro 13" Unibody 2012末主板更换 you should have a latch piece maybe missing!

The left side of the connecting cable appears to be bent sideways which of course will then make it not fit into the socket, a bit hard to see clearly but the latch also appears to be absent....... If so, A new keyboard complete with power button and backlight as these are very easy to be damaged on removal + if the connector itself is damaged or missing the latch that would also need replacing. Specialist work.

the latch is not missing it's just a different color, I do have another motherboard (the damaged one) which has the colors inverted.. yes the cable is a little bit bent, but does go in if you push the motherboard against when it is disassembled, problem is that when it is in the case it is nearly impossible to angle it the same way

@ryoga - I use a thin strip of electricians tape folding over one end for a handle and the strip taped to the ribbon cable to help guide it in, the when it’s correctly placed and the latch is set. All that’s needed is to pull the piece of tape off.

yes I was able to finally do it.. sadly I think the donor mainboard is also gone
