How to separate the top screen from the hinge?

Alright so I'm trying to fix my New Nintendo 3ds XL since it has a mass of dead pixels in the bottom left corner on the top LCD screen. So far it's been going good, I separated all the boards and plates I needed to.... Until i got to the hinge. I managed to get the barrel part (if that's what it's called) pushed through until it won't go anymore, and now all the tutorials tell me to pull the top part of the 3ds off of the hinge. I have no idea how to do that. most of them look like they just use brute force, and I feel like that will break something.
