2012 A1278 Screen Display Burn GPU Fix?

So, I have just bought an old 2012 A1278 2.5 Ghz model for just a few cents.... literally! The previous owner sold it as defective (No display only a white screen with a brown burn like design). 1st thing I did was turn it on to see if it boots up, everything fine except the display issue. I have connected up a BRAND NEW LCD and I get to be able to read the log in screen! But what a mess it is..... I guess @danj or @oldturkey03 will confirm that the GPU is burned out and hence I have a nice complete set of doner parts from this machine! But, IF there is a fix possible I would love to know!

Image 1 is from the new display (No bezel fitted)

Image 2 is from another display (Note that at the side of the unit is the new display without the bezel fitted)

@livfe so the images you posted, are from displays that show like that on your "new" purchase. Those same displays show proper on another computer? Have you taken your new purchase apart yet, or at least opened it, to see what's going on in the inside?

完成的

@oldturkey03 Yes I have opened up the unit to install the 'new display'. I I have added fresh images from the new and another display.

@livfe would you mind very much to post some large, well focused images ( both sides ) of the logic board from this computer?

The same display shows perfect on another computer?

完成的

@oldturkey03 I haven't tried the 'New' Display on another unit as yet, not very enthusiastic to open up a perfect unit that is for sale in case I somehow with my great luck waste that also...... I can try to put up some clear images in the next 1-2 hours....

完成的

@livfe that's fine. No worries. After all, it is possible that you have two bad displays :-)

What GPU?? The 13" models don't have a discreet GPU (AMD as an example).

The image shows a messed up display both the anti-reflective coatings are damaged and will need to be removed to at least get rid of the remains, the edge cupping is either a damaged LCD panel or the diffusion sheets are damaged from liquid damage.

@Danj Dan, tiis same effect shows with a BRAND NEW screen and another 2 known good screens.... so it cannot be from the screen itself, hence I thought a board problem with the graphics? Or did you mean the sheets behind the screen? It is a non retina 2012.

完成的

@livfe - Not possible! These two images are from a bad display unit. Post a fresh image of the two displays side by side in the same image with a slight reflection from the side on both. You can easily tell that way if the coatings are damaged.

if they are both clear then the diffuser sheets are stained (mold) and the person who sold you the display likely knew and just wanted your money.

Yes, the teardown is from a retina screen the construction is basically the same. In the uni’s the cover glass is independent of the LCD where as the cover glass is part of the LCD unit in the retinas.

@Danj But when I test the 3 known good and the brand new screens on another unit everything is fine.... just on this one it gets the burn look....

No sign of any mold inside any of the housings or sheets.... weird

@livfe - Let’s look at how LCDs work… Think how a spreadsheet is made of columns and rows. So a defect in the signal will either follow the given column or row, it won’t travel across at a diagonal direction. If the signal was poorly structured you would get the chroma effect as the RGB segments of the give pixel would be getting the wrong signal. That the leaves the image structure held in RAM here you could encounter missing elements or skew in the image. All we see in the images is a smear at a diagonal and not a constant line or lines with the image peaking out. This is clearly an issue with the screen. Are you sure you posted the correct image as this clearly can’t be from a ‘new’ display.

@danj I have updated the images in the main question with the new display and a known other good one.... almost the same results.... so, I can try to order some new diffusion sheets and see if that helped? The 3rd screen I had here at the time of posting has since gone out with the customers unit that was here for a minor fix. I do have 2 other 2012's here but I don't really want to take them apart in case I bugger them up with my luck :D

@danj According to some LCD suppliers, the 2012 A1278 does not have any 'Sheets' that go behind the display.... I never noticed them before thinking about it.... The screen from the for sale unit is working perfectly on this unit... so I guess I have '2 bad displays' even though one is totally new purchased 1 week ago....

Anyway, I tried a 3rd and final screen and now there is no boot chime or display.... hell.

@livfe - A raw LCD panel seller won’t offer the sheets in the same manor a raw keyboard selling won’t offer the screws! So that’s expected.

With that said… many keyboard sellers do supply the needed screws or will supply them when asked. In the case of the defuser sheets if not damaged they can be reused if one only needs to replace the LCD panel alone.

完成的

@danj Yes I have asked 3 LCD sellers and they said the MBP 2012 did not have these sheets.... so I don't know..... there were none in the unit I am trying to fix.... besides, it suddenly has no boot chime or anything on the display now.... fan is spinning....great.

@livfe - All LCDs have a defuser of some sort. The defuser element isn’t so obvious as the Retina display as everything is out in the open that I linked to in my answer. The older displays had them within the display unit cassette like the iMacs. So the replacement includes the backlight LEDs and the defuser elements. The backside in the iMac display cassette is the reflector, in this series of MacBook Pro’s the case shell is the reflective surface.

@danj Everything is new or super cleaned up....

完成的

@livfe - The solvent you used could have damaged the sheets or panel coatings. The angle of the markings tells us there is still a deposit of something on the LCD panel assembly. Use a light held at a sharp angle to get a reflection off of the surfaces (both sides) you should see the material. I only use reagent grade 90% ISO and distilled water (pure H2O) on display panels and sheets.
