MacBook Air performing extremely slow

Hi,

I just received a Macbook Air from 2017. According to the System Info, it has a 1,8 GHz i5, 8 GB RAM and an Intel HD Graphics 6000, equipped with a 128GB SSD.

Battery has about 350 Cycle with about 60% of it's capacity left. System is running Mojave 10.14.6.

To the question: For some reason, that Macbook runs extremely slow. I had the same MacBook before and it ran significantly faster.

What I mean with slow:

  • about 6-7 seconds to open Finder
  • about 5 minutes to boot
  • about 30 seconds to open Safari

What could this be? It shouldn't be a software issue, because the OS is freshly installed (at least, that's what the seller told me).. So I'd expect it to be a hardware issue... What though? Would this be anything that's easy to "debug"? Or would it most likely cost me more then it would worth reselling it in that way?

EDIT: Just as a little sidefact.. I just checked and the activity monitor shows basically a permanent 100% CPU usage, about 72% coming from "system" and the rest from "user"... Could it actually be a software issue? Or could it be a problem with the CPU or something else?

EDIT 2: after opening the MacBook, I can see, that it seems like somebody messed with it around already.. Had problems booting, so I opened it up to see what's going on... You think it's worth taking the mainboard out to see the other side as well? Or just resell it as it is?

You need to run the onboard diagnostics if you can, Apple messed it up with an OS update and never fixed it. If the diags fails to run you’ll need to run TG Pro to see what SMC is doing.

The process - kernal_task can go into overdrive consuming the CPU!

This is both a SMC action and can be a misbehaving App as well. As you likely haven’t started any odd Apps I doubt that’s the issue.

I’m betting it’s SMC! SMC will do this to throttle down the CPU as a critical sensor has failed or reporting an out of range condition.

This can be heat, cooling or power related.

@danj Well, now I just ran into another issue... Yesterday evening, I started an update to Monterey which went through mostly, before I went to bed... Now this morning I wanted to start the MacBook, but it doesn't boot anymore.... Pressing the power button, I can hear (and after opening also see) the fan spin for about 2 seconds, before it turns off again. While that happens, I don't see anything on the screen.

PS: After disconnecting the battery now and reconnecting it, it seems to boot up again.. Not sure how reliably though.. I also noticed, that this seems to be a very very messed up MacBook Air anyway, that I got there... Check my question, I updated it with some pictures of the insight - seems like it has hot glue, wrong screws and what not.. Feels like the issue could be everywhere...

I'll check the SMC anyway, if I can reach something there...

@danj okay, I have TG Pro up and running on the Macbook, although it took like what felt hours to get the installation done...

What should I look for there?

What I can say is that temperatures seem to look fine, none of them higher then 40°C, average computer 30°C and average CPU 34°C...

What do I have to look for?

I also just now bought the full version... Diagnostics looks fine, except the first point, where it says Last Shutdown/Sleep.. there it says "Forced - Battery current outside limit"....

@nameless7069 - I think you have your answer the battery is bad and needs replacing.

@danj I hoped, that this would be the "easy fix"... However, doesn't seem like it.. I tried unplugging the battery and starting with power cable attached... The result: same slow MacbookAir and same message in TG Pro...

完成的
