Best E-GPU for MacBook Pro Early 2013

Hi there!

I was wanting to get an e-gpu for my Macbook Pro 13" from early 2013 since it no longer is able to keep up with my everyday GPU thirsty tasks. Which GPU would it be worth upgrading too and what case and power supply would I need?

Not sure I follow you here. The internal graphics is part of the Intel CPU chip. There is no discrete GPU option internally.

An external GPU option is really not possible as the older Thunderbolt cases are no longer available for your series, you might find one used. It was a good idea! But it didn’t really work effectively if you are using the internal display as the bandwidth was not large enough.

As far as what GPU board, again the bandwidth of the connection won’t allow you to get the full performance of the GPU board.

The bottomline here is between age of your system and the limits of both its graphics and external I/O, I would recommend getting a much newer system which offers the graphical performance you are looking for. I would look for a used 14 or 16” MacBook Pro.

And if you still want more extreme graphics performance get the current Thunderbolt cases with the GPU board that meets your needs.

Since I can't afford a new or used Macbook, are there any other cheap laptop alternatives like Lenovo and other brands that would suitable for me?

Or if I do get a used Macbook, what year/processor Macbook would be good?

@cft8dkbde7ayppi - I use 2015 15” MacBook Pro’s for my photography when in the field. But even that is a bit slow in rendering sizable images.

As I don’t know your use case I can’t offer much here. In any case it does sound like you need to save a bit, even trying to snag a used system as you do want a system with 16GB if you can and a sizable drive as well.
