Typically there are a few different reasons why a PC would overheat.

  1. Keep your laptop on a flat surface: Place your laptop on a hard, flat surface to ensure proper airflow. Using it on soft surfaces like beds, couches, or pillows can block the air vents and cause overheating.
  2. Clean the air vents and fans: Dust and debris can accumulate inside your laptop, blocking airflow and causing overheating. Use compressed air to blow out the dust from the vents and fans periodically.
  3. Check power settings: Make sure your power settings are appropriately configured. In Windows, use the "Power & sleep settings" to choose a power plan that balances performance and energy savings.
  4. Update your operating system and drivers: Ensure your operating system is up to date. Manufacturers often release updates that improve system stability and efficiency.
  5. Make sure your laptop is not infected by any malware. Some computer viruses and malware can cause your system to run hot. You can use Task Manager to help you identify resource-intensive processes/viruses that may be causing your laptop to work harder than necessary. Close or limit applications that are consuming excessive resources.
  6. Consider thermal paste replacement: If you're comfortable with hardware work, applying fresh thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink can improve heat conductivity and reduce temperatures. Typically the lifespan of thermal paste can last for a while but can vary depending on use. You can check out this guide on applying thermal paste here.
