Phone resets every 2 minutes

Block Image

My son dropped my phone into his kiddie pool. I got it out in under a minute but now the phone resets every two minutes (literally) why?!

Hi Briahna,

I suspect that if you carefully time the resets, counting from the time the login screen comes up, you'll find that the time frame is actually exactly three minutes. That's the time between sensor scans the phone does. When it runs into a situation it can't handle like not being able to read a particular sensor, it invokes something called a kernel panic, which basically logs the error and reboots the phone.

The big problem here is that once the phone reboots, the problem is still there so the next time it scans the sensors (in three minutes), it runs into exactly the same situation and reboots the phone again.

So the trick here is to figure out what's causing the kernel panic. Fortunately for us, Alisha (@flannelist), has written our definitive guide to kernel panics.

What you'll want to do is use the guide to locate the panic logs on your phone. Pull up the latest one and copy and paste or screenshot the first page then add it to your question.

We're looking for a missing sensor, which will tell us which part has been affected by the water and is causing the boot loop. Once we know what that is, it's usually fairly straight-forward to replace it.

However, if you really want to be sure your phone is going to continue working, you'll want to mitigate the water damage as much as possible. that means opening up the phone and cleaning it out to get as much contamination and corrosion out as possible. Follow the instructions in this guide and hopefully that will help you keep your phone alive.

Update (08/08/23)

Okay, with the panic log we can see the smoking gun right here.

Alisha's Wiki points us straight at the cause.

PRS0 is, we generally believe, a pressure sensor; it's used in conjunction with the barometric vent on the phone, for what I'm not sure but it is a sensor that's been known to fail and it's definitely dead on your phone. So your next step will be to replace the charging port assembly and that will cure your boot loop. iFixit has a video guide that will show you everything you need to replace the part.

However, if you prefer the step-by-step written instructions, there's a Spanish site that has just what you need. Used in conjunction with the Chrome browser and its automatic translation, it's very usable even if you don't speak Spanish.

If you choose to, you can support iFixit's repair efforts by purchasing the part directly from them. Technically the correct replacement will match the phone color; white, green, black or brown, but in practice it's only cosmetic any any of them will work.

Many of the replacements I've seen come in two flavors, with or without a daughterboard. This is actually news to me, as I haven't had occasion to work on an 11 Pro Max yet, but it doesn't look like you have to have the original one from your phone in order for everything to work correctly. I'm guessing it's an option to save a little money to be able to change that daughterboard, but most of us don't have the equipment or expertise to do that job ourselves, so we're going to just get one with the daughterboard and not worry about it. Here's the iFixit part; you'll need to select the right color though.

If costs are a concern, you can shop around and find the part on other sites; I usually check Amazon, eBay and AliExpress depending on my quality vs. delivery time tradeoffs.

Hopefully that'll get you going; it would be good to clean out the inside with isopropyl alcohol (at least 90% concentration) while you've got it open anyway.

Good luck; let us know how it goes. We're always here if you have more questions so don't be afraid to ask.

@briahnacochran I can't be 100% sure, but that doesn't look like a panic log. The file name should start with panic.full, while it appears the one you posted starts with avconferenced. @flannelist, do you agree or is this a log in some kind of different format?

You’re right. I’m sorry. I’m trying to do everything in the three minutes before my phone cuts off and I sent the wrong screenshot. I changed it.

@briahnacochran I understand completely; it's easy to get frazzled knowing you've only got exactly three minutes to do everything you need before you have to start all over again.
