Newly installed MBP Battery dies at 7%.

I just installed a new battery into my Macbook Pro. It was an aftermarket battery bought from Amazon.com.

I installed the battery and turned it on. It display 99%, ran fine for a short while and then died. I realized I needed to restart the SMC, so I did that (started holding Ctr+Opt+Shift on left side until power light went green then amber, then restarted it and held Opt+Cmd+P+N until it restarted.)

Afterwards, I followed instructions to fully charge the device to 100%. It stopped charging at multiple points (it seemed to be whenever I closed the laptop? I would have to reset the SMC to get it to start charging again.)

Once I reached 100%, I left it overnight, then started discharging the battery. Used it as normal, like the guide suggested (But forgot to turn off all power management options), and it died at about 7%

I then left it sitting for 5 hours as suggested to try to let the battery 'fully drain.'

After 5 hours, I plugged it in and started it again, the battery reads 7%.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, or how to get it to understand that this is actually 0%.

You did do it right, that method applies to older MacBook models from 2006-2012, but I would have recommended that since the battery is aftermarket. I avoid Amazon products for repairing electronics because there can be issues with batteries not charging correctly or showing the right %. I have used iFixit and other reputable sites for parts

This battery kit from Ifixit has the items you will need to replace your battery. Here is a guide for replacing the battery too

I don't know if I can get my battery compartment open again. One of the screws stripped while I was putting it back in.

And I'm worried I'll buy another battery and it'll be the same thing again.

@minlungelow - I find this utility app helps in monitoring things CoconutBattery it allows you to see the battery’s condition much better than what Apple offers.

Sadly, you do need another battery from your symptoms. The reason you see a staggered charge is the battery is over heating so SMC cuts the power until the battery cools down before starting up again.

Do make sure you have a real Apple MagSafe charger as many knockoffs can damage your systems charging logic.

I do have a real magsafe charger, it's the one I got with my computer.

The charge isn't staggering, it just flat out refuses to charge once it hits a certain percentage. It charges while the device is powered off, or if I reset the SMC.

But yeah, I can see that I do need to get a new battery.

@minlungelow - The word staggering is what we call your symptom. When you clear SMCs data, all you’ve done if given SMC a case of amnesia! Until it relearns the batteries temp and shuts down the charging again. This is a bit dangerous! Over-riding the safety system could start a fire!
