Power button replacement guide

The power button on my iPhone 12 is not working 50% of the time. It’s not clicking or I have to press really hard. I think that I will have to replace the power button cable. I have looked but I cannot find the guide to do so. Do you have one? I also view just the tear down and it makes no mention of this cable.

Hi Sheena,

Yeah, I wasn't able to locate an iFixit-style guide for what you want to do on your iPhone 12 in any of my usual sources, but I did find a YouTube video that walks you through the process reasonably well.

That's the good news; the bad news is that since the power button flex cable is also connected to the wireless charging coil, you pretty much have to gut the phone to get to it. Mainly you're looking at removing the battery and motherboard to access the flex cable you need to replace. Here's the video.

When you go looking for parts, you'll often find the power/volume flex cable being sold separately from the wireless charging coil. If you're good at soldering you can go that way, but to be honest when I tried to do that myself I ended up melting the flex cable and ruining it. So my recommendation is to find one that comes preassembled to the charging coil and put them in as one piece. This one on Amazon should work, but you can also find the parts on eBay and AliExpress among others.

One note to be aware of that I ran into is that you don't want to glue down the coil right off the bat. I would suggest setting it in place then refitting the motherboard. Plug the assembly into the motherboard so the whole thing is positioned correctly and will reach the spot it needs to be plugged into. Once it's in place, mark it or hold it in place while you pull the motherboard again so you can remove the adhesive covers and glue it down. If you just freestyle it you run the risk of having it glued down in a position where the plug doesn't reach, then you have to peel it back up and start over. Been there, done that; don't be me.

Anyway, that should get you through the process; don't forget to buy new adhesives for the battery and the screen for when you put everything back together. To be honest, I usually buy a couple of screen adhesive sheets; they're a little touchy to put on and can't be adjusted if they're off when you try to install them. If that happens you end up with a tangled ball of adhesive and have to either do without or wait until you can reorder another sheet. Again, I speak from experience here. Call it a learning experience, lol.

Hopefully that'll give you all the information you need to do the job; I might note that you could use the iFixit battery replacement guide to get through a good portion of the disassembly you'll need to do if you prefer that over a video.
