Got the prohibitory sign, circle w/slash. Won't erase or repair. Can I still get any data from it. An important file is on it. Can boot with cd but can't install. No HD found. Tried verify and repair but just takes forever, like hours. Will get a new HD but would really like to get that file off old one.

Try removing your HD and then insert the HD into an external box. Then use the HD as external in other computer and you might be lucky to take all of your files.

try on ebay for 2.5'' external case or in a local computer store close to you.

As Loukas stated take the HD out and put it into an external case.
It's best to get a combo USB & Firewire case. I use Micro Center my self but any good computer store out there that have them as well.

Before you close the case up check to see if you hear the HD making any noise.
If the drive is not making any noise you may have a stuck spindle motor.
Carefully bang the case squarely on a firm surface from a few inches once or twice (Platter parallel to the surface). If your lucky it may free up the motor. Don't go crazy here! as you don't want to kill the drive only free up the stuck motor!
The last option if the data is that important to you is to send the drive in to a data recovery service. Fair warning! this can be very expensive and they may not be able to save your data if the heads have crashed into the platters.

Not familiar with external box. Where can I get one?

Well I got a SATA wire and attached the drive with USB to laptop and used disk utility. I shows up there but is grayed out. Did first aid several times but still grayed out and won't mount. First aid says it seems to be ok and it vibrates a little when attached to wire but can't get to any files.
Installed new drive and with iFixit guide is doing great. Win some loose some. Thanks for your input.
