Uprade internal SATA II (3G) SSD with a SATA III (6G) compliant

Would like to know if anyone has already changed the factory pre-installed SATA II SSD (built to order) with a high performance SSD supporting the factory integrated SATA III (6G) interface.

Apple's factory pre-installed SSD does have a very bad performance in comparison to others, e.g. Kingston, Samsung, OCZ, etc.

As fas as I know all Intel Quad-Core i7 based iMACs have been equipped with the Intel 6G Series Chipset. Finally, SATA III SSD should be supported without problems.

Would like to know what SSD will be proven to work and whether there are any obstacles to overcome.

Thanks for the hint. I have a brand new OCZ Agility III (6G) on my desk but I cannot see any jumpers. There is just the SATA III connector and a second interface if you want to assemble this SSD into a RAID systems (I was told). No jumper connectors as fas I can see!

You may have to step down the speed using the jumpers on the newer drive. Just do a search for the drive you are looking at and jumpers and you should find the proper settings. If the drive is to fast you will not be able to see it in Disk Utilities and thus be unable to format it.

This drive is only backward compatible to 3 GHz. Looks like a lot of people have had problems installing this drive in Macs. I would go here to get support from the manufacturer: http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/...

Yes, I can confirm the OCZ Agility 3 makes more trouble than fun. From my point of view this drive is not suitable to use in a mac computer regardless of which mac you have. I tested it with macbook pro (model 2010) and it did not work. I tried everything possible, i.e. firmware update, etc.

However, I found one supplier that is well known in the Apple community. It's called OWC (Other World Computing). They offer a 6G 256GB SSD upgrade for Macbook Air (models 2010 & 2011) that really works with 6G (negotiated link speed). I have seen that working in a Macbook Air 13" 2011 model with Intel i7 1.8GHz CPU and it's incredible fast! The owner confirmed it was a plug'n'play upgrade without any problems and for sure he is not technician!

Regarding their 6G iMAC SSDs I did not find a person that confirmed the same. Anyone here that already made positive experiences?

I have a 240GB SSD OCZ Agility III, installed in an iMac Mid 2010. It works very well with no problems at all. The SSD isn't the fastest ever but the SATA-Controller in the Mac is SATA II (3GB/s), so the Controller is the Limiter.
