Wash time has changed

I have a Maytag front loader MHW5630HW washer. The cycle time for Normal/Regular wash was 51 minutes now it is at 1 hour and 41 minutes. Unplugged it for 10 minutes still at 1 hour and 41 minutes. If started it will wash but cycle will take close to 2 hours to complete. Changing cycles does change time. Water pressure looks and sounds good. Any suggestions to reset it?

Donald, were you able to figure out a fix? I have the same issue where my Normal cycle time also went up to 1 hour and 41 minutes and our quick wash is now 49 minutes. Would really appreciate you sharing the fix if you figured one out.

Mine did that and it was that the steam setting was clicked as on secretly

Have the same Maytag. On Normal cycle, if I change Soil Level from 2 bars to 3 bars, the time jumps from :55 to 1:36. It may be all in your combination of settings, but Soil Level seems to change the time more than other settings (Temp, Spin).

There is a button labeled “STEAM” on the left bottom of the control panel, directly below “SOIL”. That button has been pushed. Push it again to deactivate.

@ocs I didn’t know this personally (Maytag isn’t really sold in Norway), but with Maytag places their (apparently) service manuals for their front loaders somewhere under the top “cover”. It will require some disassembly though.

Once you have the service manual (I couldn’t find the specific SM online quickly), it will outline the procedure for a full reset. It used to be enough to just unplug for a minute and plug back in, but with the amount of electronics and programming in the machines today, the reset procedures are individual from maker to maker and sometimes from model to model…

Hello Donald,

It could be just the normal function of the machine. These machines have sensing features which can cause the machine to lengthen (usually) or vary the cycle from the expected time. See Item 5 on Page 6 of the Use and Care Manual.

Here is the Use and Care Manual (you may have to prove you aren't a robot by checking a box, etc. to download)

The attached service manual may prove useful. By appearance, your machine should be covered in this manual.

Here is a link to a service manual

Page 1-7 item 5 may be useful and the service manual will allow you to test various functions.

Hi Donald,

My first thought was that the timer motor might be giving out, but it appears on your particular model that's probably not the case. I did run across the Maytag User Manual for your washer here.

User manual Maytag MHW5630HW (English - 66 pages)

Page 28 has a troubleshooting section, and there's actually an entry for cycle times. Here's what it has to say.

Cycle time changes or cycle time too long

Normal washer operation. The cycle times vary automatically based on your water pressure, water temperature, detergent, and clothes load. The options you select will also affect the cycle times.

Excessive suds in washer. When excessive suds are detected, a special suds routine automatically starts to remove extra suds and ensure proper rinsing of your garments. This routine will add time to the original cycle.

Load may be out of balance. When load unbalance occurs, a washing process will start to redistribute the load. This extends the cycle time. Avoid washing single items. Balance a single item such as a rug or jeans jacket with a few extra items.

Not using correct cycle for load type. The Rapid Wash cycle is designed for smaller load sizes (2–4 items) of lightly soiled garments. If larger loads are washed in this cycle, cycle time will be increased.

Not using correct cycle for load type. When using the Rapid Wash or Delicates cycle, you should wash small loads. This ensures a gentle wash for your garments without increasing cycle time.

Sorry, but I didn't find anything in the user manual about resetting the washer. I'm personally skeptical that any of these will help, but ya gotta go through the steps to be sure.

How do you turn off the steam button…

The steam button did work, but now I have to hit the steam button for every load.

Is there a way to put it back to the default setting so that I don’t have to do it every time?

Our Maytag is doing exactly the same thing. Tried to change the steam and I see the indicator toggle on and off but nothing changes the time on the machine. This long time (now 1hr 45 min - was 55 min) shows up immediately once you select the normal load size. The time is locked in before it has a chance to evaluate any of the conditions such as load balance, water temp or pressure, or level of suds, etc. So all the timer settings have almost doubled about 6 months ago and still hoping there may be an option to reset to what we had for over a year. Any ideas?
