Furnace gas valve noise

The gas valve on my gas furnace is making a loud noise every few minutes while it's running, I checked for moisture in the gas line or the gas valve and I checked to see if gas valve was getting the proper voltage I checked for loose wires so far I can't seem to find the problem this is one of those that I come across once in awhile that drives the person nuts even after you have been working in this field for quite some time everyone I'm sure once in awhile comes across that one unit that gives them fits they have to figure it out I hate to buy new gas valve and stick on it if that's not the problem but it looks like that's what I'm going to do and try that anyway but I would like to know exactly what's going on

Let me clarify: I have been installing and working on heating and A/C units for many years, it's just that every once in a while I come across a problem I have not seen before and this furnace has me a little puzzled. I checked what may have been the problem, moisture in the gas line or in the gas valve system or maybe the gas valve is not getting the correct power that it needs to operate maybe a loose wire somewhere or something I can't say it's a faulty gas valve because the furnace is working it's just that darn noise and it's not a constant noise it's now and then mostly after the unit has started up and it will make this noise for a short period of time and then go away and I should mention that the light does come on and flash indicating that it has a weak flame but after it starts up that light goes out and it's fine

I know that moisture in the gas line or the gas valve will cause it to make a this sound or perhaps the gas valve not getting the power that it needs to correct power will cause it to make a rattling or loud sound like this all has been checked that I know of and I can't seem to find the problem the furnace will come on but the light does blink at first and on the chart it indicates that it has a weak flame but in a few seconds the light goes out and the furnace is fine and there's no noise until the next time it starts up this one's got me puzzle

@J Keef

Just my $0.02 worth but have you checked the gas supply pressure at all?

Don't know what you have there but perhaps there is a regulator of some sort before it reaches the furnace and it's not maintaining the correct pressure.

Here with some gas appliances e.g. stove there is an inline pressure regulator just before the stove and its output pressure is adjusted to suit the stove requirements by measuring how far water rises in a gauge which is connected via a hose to a test point on the regulator.

Just a thought

@J Keef what make and model is your furnace?

Pressure is good gas water heater is working good gas range is good all wiring has been gone through several times no moisture or water in the gas line pressure is just where it should be, I installed a new air induction fan motor on it year before last, it's a nordyne furnace in a mobile home. Let me tell you this I am a licensed certified HVAC technician have been for more than 30 years, now I could just start putting everything New on this furnace untill the problem is solved, but not this time there is no use in spending money on parts that I don't need not in today's time my next step is to install a new gas valve on the furnace to see if that makes a difference. But the gas valve I have is a good valve but it's used . I will let u know how it goes.

Hi J Keef. It sounds like a possibility may be a loose ground wire or ground path (I know you checked the wiring, but bear with me). From what you are describing it sounds like the gas valve could be cycling rapidly in response to loss of signal from the Flame detector. From what I understand, the flame detector (if it's the rod type) uses the gas flame itself to act as a rectifier; it is fed ac and the flame causes there to be a pulsing DC output that the control board senses. Because there is only one wire to the flame detector, it is merely an electrode; the current actually flows from the electrode through the flame to the parts of the furnace (FAU) that the flame touches. So the ground wire that connects the control board to the frame of the FAU is part of that control circuit. The current flow is in microamperes.

I'm wondering if there are thermal expansion changes that occur as the unit heats up that cause the ground path to become more firmly established once the unit warms up. The fact that it starts working staedily after a time makes me think less about the control board and more about something external to it. Also the blinking light would fit with a weak flame signal which would be caused by a poor or slightly intermittent connection (mimicking a weak flame that is flickering a bit). The other thing is (what I gather to be) the repeated occurrence of this and usually when first starting, not when it has been running. I wonder if some part of the heat exchanger flame tube or the like could be loose since the current must flow from the places that the flame touches. It gets hot and tightens up.

U know something U R a really deep person. I thought I knew a lot about Heating and cooling but it sounds like you got me beat. U mentioned things I completely forgot about, that's where retirement Will get you, I admit I am rusty but I tell everyone ( Hey I might be show , But I am good.) Thank you so much for mentioning a couple things I forgot about I will have to check them out and I will get back to you and let you know thank you so much
