My dark gray display is damaged. The store doesn’t have the dark gray display in stock but it has the silver display. Is the silver display compatible with the dark gray MacBook Air? I don’t care about the matching optics. Thanks!

YES they can do just that
There are no differences apart in the electronics the only difference is the colour:-)
In my opinion I would wait but if you are ready to go ahead I say go for it as it would be unique
If you want it to look normal I would get a nice skin for it

If they are the same model, then yes, they would be compatible, regardless of color. Apple would not allow you to do this sort of swap, but the parts are functionally the same so it should still work as a replacement screen regardless. So if the aesthetics don't matter to you, then this shouldn't be an issue.
