MacBook sleeps when unplugged. Battery not recognized by coconut.

I purchased a battery from iFixit in March 2022 for my Macbook Air 2017 i5.

I installed it, and at first it was working great. Then about 1 month ago, the system stopped recognizing the battery.  When I unplug the power adapter, the computer goes into some kind of sleep or hibernate mode.

CoconutBattery says it doesn't even see any battery.  See https://imgur.com/a/MhSTYXe

Oddly enough, I think the battery is actually charging, and sort of being used. When I plug in the power adapter, it shows green for a moment then goes steady on orange.  And when I unplug the magsafe power adapter, I can hear the fan continue to run as it shuts down to sleep/hibernate mode. And of course, when I plug it back in and press the power button, it takes a few moments to revive back to the original run state.

Another strange symptom, is that the system runs VERY slow. I've read elsewhere that a problem with a battery might cause a slower system.

I've tried the oft-recommended software PRAM and SMC reset through shut-down and using various key-presses. I've tried a hardware SMC reset by removing the battery and holding the power button for over 20 seconds. None of those worked. Of course, that also involved re-seating the battery. I've inspected the top of the logic board (without removing it) with a magnifier, no apparent discoloration or charring. No odd smell on the logic board either.

I've opened up a ticket with iFixit.com, but I figured I'd post here as well.

Sounds more like a logic board than a battery issue. Charging IC and logic battery circuitry are on the top side of the board which you can't see unless you take it off the Mac.

@arbaman Thanks. Oddly enough, the issue was the battery. Answer has been posted fyi. Thanks for helping me!

@coolhandlouis Yeah, i read your updates and the further attempt to run on the first battery you received. Well done, despite the weird glitches you experienced, it's reasonable to call the battery as culprit. Strange or hard to explain things happen from time to time.

Thanks for taking the time to report back!

So ifixit sent me another battery, and it works! Just to test, I put the other battery back in, the system didn't see it, as before. Put the new battery in again, and it recognizes it. So it seems to have been the battery. And the system is running quickly again. Yay! Also, thank you ifixit.com for great customer service. Still, it was a very strange problem.

My MacBook did that once, and I know that type of "Sleep/Hibernate" mode your talking about. Your Mac will do that if it thinks your battery is dead. Try plugging in your old battery again and see what it does. Let me know in the comments, and I might be able to give more ideas after.

Unfortunately, I didn't have my old battery (call it Battery1), I had thrown it away. So I could not test that strategy on my new battery (call it Battery2). Anyway, ifixit sent me another battery (Battery3) and it works! So it seems to have been the Battery2... maybe. Hopefully this won't happen again. It's very strange though. There's still another possibility of a hairline (fraction of a hairline) crack on the logic board, and my reseating of Battery3 closed the connection on that. If I run into this issue again, I'm going to majorly suspect logic board.

Also now I have two new batteries, both from ifixit. Maybe I'll try your suggestion and take out Battery3 and put Battery2 back in and see if that works. See if somehow that revives the computer's ability to see the older new battery. But yeah my concern is that I don't want to mess with anything now that it's working lol.

EDIT: So I decided to test Battery2 again. Computer didn't recognize it, nothing there. Battery3 again, it's up and working. So I'm concluding that there was a strange problem with the battery.

Thanks for your help!
