I don't know what to call this, and have thus far had no luck googling an answer. Ideally, I'd have a small meter that would plug in to a female RJ45 wall jack. It would give me a green light (or whatever) to indicate that there was an active network available.
There must be a tool that does this? What's it called and where can I find one?

if you are just looking for "hot" ports, where a router or switch is already in place, you just need something like this:

Does anyone know if anything smaller exists? I remember a long time ago when I worked at a big networking center one of the technicians had a thumb-sized terminator on his keychain he'd just plug into ports to see if they're active. I'm looking for something similar.

What you're looking for is a Network Testing Device. I'm not sure what the price for such a device is, but I can guarantee you that it does the job. The tool that I've used in the past is a Fluke LinkRunner. Keep in mind this is a professional model, but there should be similar devices available.

This must be the oldest question that was reawakened. It is 4 years old and Bruce and David have not been active in a while. You might want to try to ask your question right here
I use one of these, but it only test 10/100 lines not 1000 Mbps lines.

Back in the day, I’ve made a few testers out of these as well. Soldered a push button and a battery inside.
