screen appears on external monitor despite the LCD being plugged in

If everything is plugged in and I boot with an external monitor the desktop / login screen appear on the external monitor despite the LCD screen being plugged in. Is it safe to say its likely the LCD then and not the Back Light board?

Fxguy1 post some pictures with your Question of this "hoping its not the socket connector that is damaged" and the area around where you've seen the spark. These iMacs love to pop some of their inductors....在已经存在的问题里加入图片

Press a flashlight against the display do you see the faint image of your desktop and its icons? If you do then its the backlight logic, otherwise you have either a mess-up display cable or the logic board connector, or the display is bad.

If the backlight board is bad, will the OS still detect the screen? As int I put a new LCD display in and it's still not working, so its either the backlight or the connector / motherboard. But I'm thinking if the backlight is the problem then the OS would still detect the display when using an external monitor ?

@Fxguy1 - There is no monitoring of the internal displays backlight logic within the OS, the displays image logic is monitored!

The external display is key here! Does the external display show an image? If not then you know the GPU logic has an issue.

But make sure the external display and its cabling are good, test on a second system to be sure. I've seen people pull their hair out as they had a bad cable or adapter.

Dan - Absolutely the external display works fine! Its the internal LCD that I cannot get working. There was a spark / short near the LCD socket when trying to reinstall the LCD. I'm trying to determine if that blew the LCD display OR if there is a backlight issue. I bought a new display and installed and same results of a black screen.

@Fxguy1 - Sparks is not good ;-{

Did you plug the cable in backwards?

完成的

No, I was struggling to get it plugged in and my mom butted in and tried to plug it in and she touched the cable to the bracket causing it to spark.

However - if the sparks shorted the mother board or the GPU then I wouldnt be able to use an external monitor right? The imac works fine just not with the internal LCD.

So trying to troubleshoot that hoping its not the socket connector that is damaged on the mainboard.
