Cracked glass, can it be replaced with the LCD of an iMac 2019?

Hi everyone,

I hope the question is simple:

I got my hand on a few iMacs lately, in bad conditions and about to go to eWaste, and no one likes that!

Particularly, I have this iMac 27” Late 2013 that is in working conditions, but has chipped glass and the stock HDD. I have been thinking of opening it up and replacing the HDD for an SSD or even better an M.2. Problem being that the glass in chipped pretty substantially and I am being wary that when I’ll try cutting off the glue, applying too much pressure in the area might cause the LCD to break or crack further.

Before attempting this, I managed to get my hands on a dead 27” iMac 2019. Dead in the sense that as far as I know, PCU went out, taking down CPU and Mobo with it.

Now: in the hopes that the LCD and/or M.2 storage of the 2019 iMac are still in working conditions, what are the chances that these are compatible with the Late 2013 iMac?

A replacement LCD+Glass for the Late 2013 is still very pricey for something I didn’t plan on spending money on, so if I could find a compatible model that happens to be around for very cheap, I’ll risk opening the iMac to upgrade the HDD, otherwise I feel the cost of the new LCD will outweight the performance gained by upgrading the storage devices. (This is currently being used simply as a music station to plug my eDrums in and record the MIDI track, HDD or SSD won’t really make much difference when it comes to that, but would be cool to have a better machine if it’s for free).

Thank you!

Alex

Reference this great guide The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs It doesn't get into the 2019 iMac but I think you'll see enough to figure things out.

I would stick with the real Apple blade SSD's or look at OWC.

M.2 drives are not that great in Macs as Apple did their own thing with some of the signal lines and how the housekeeping tasks are handled. So while the M.2 SSD will appear to work over time they tend to fail a lot sooner than the SSD's which are designed to work within Apples specs.

Replacing the display assembly is all you can do here which is not cheap! Which is why I’m suspecting the system was tossed. I would look for a parts mate for this system which has a good display to swap over.
