Screen backlight works but no image

My father’s MacBook Pro display is not displaying any image. It happened when he opened the laptop and suddenly the picture was gone.

A couple of points.

  • The backlight is working fine and I can adjust the brightness.
  • Connecting the external monitor works.
  • I’ve opened it up twice and disconnected/reconnected the display cables (as far as I know, the right cables). I did not clean the contact pins or anything like that.
  • I’ve tried the reset PRAM/NVRAM and SMC.
  • Starting up in diagnostic mode doesn’t help as it doesn’t work with external displays.
  • I managed to reinstall a clean version of macOS by booting into recovery mode, having the screen open 5-10mm, and squeezing my little finger between the display and touch bar to navigate through the install process, not a fun time.

This happened literally a week after the warranty expired.

Can you post a short vid so we can see what you are seeing this is very odd! 在已经存在的问题里加入图片

Diid you select the correct system here as your issue sounds like the FlexGate issue The Design Flaw Behind MacBook Pro’s “Stage Light” Effect

What happens when you plug in an external display?

@danj I looked up the serial, and selected the model (EMC3301) based on those results. MacBook Pro 13, 2x TB3, Touchbar, 2019.

I don't think this is the stage light issue, the entire screen lights up equally, but it's black. But I can "edit" the brightness and see the brightness changes, but there is no image, just a black screen.

Works fine on an external display.

@danj I added the video. :)

Just wanted to be sure.

So in your case since the external display is showing an image you’ve isolated out the issue to be with the video signal path vs the backlight as you see the whole display glow grey. Basically the T-CON logic within the display assembly has failed.

Sadly the repair requires a new display assembly MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Mid 2018-Mid 2019) Display Assembly and here’s the guide 2019年款 13寸MacBook Pro 双Thunderbolt 端口显示屏总成更换

Oh %#*@, guess this will be used as a Mac Mini from now on, the replacement screen shipped would be about $690 with VAT, hardly worth it. Thanks a lot for your super assistance/help. At least I got the keyboard replaced (and with it the battery) few days ago so at least I managed to make Apple lose a few bucks.

@ingolfsson - Don't throw the towel in yet! If you just got your system repaired (keyboard) under the Apple extended warranty, I think you can get your system fixed under the repair warranty! FREE REPAIR which is 90 days of the systems service

You have a short window so get to the Store ASAP to get it fixed under the repair warranty!

Wait, so even though it's out of warranty because I had the keyboard replaced the screen could be valid for a free repair as well? The repair shop (Authorized Service Provider) knew the screen wasn't working properly when I had them replace the keyboard (+battery and top cover) - they even gave me a quote for the screen repair ($1200 ish) which I declined, but you think that I still might have them replace the screen under warranty because the battery was replaced?

Also thanks a lot for all the help and for taking the time to respond.

@ingolfsson - Ah! So you showed up with a dead display for the keyboard repair, then that changes things! You already acknowledged the defect.

No go on getting a free repair here sorry ;-{

If you had shown up with nothing but a bad keyboard then that would have been on them for breaking your display.

Yeah, I figured. They had to test the keyboard when I handed it over so I had to explain that the display wasn't showing an image. But thanks for everything, it shall be used as a Mac Mini from now on. :)

I wonder if I remove the display, will it boot and use the external display as the main display.. Right now using recovery mode is a huge hassle since it doesn't display anything on the external monitor, so installing macOS is a painful process.

Edit. I meant disconnect the display from the MB since I still need the wifi to work. :)
