Why is there vertical lines on the left side of screen

There are vertical lines on the left side after a letter opener was closed up in the mac { letter opener in same location , left side near hinge] . Now if I just touch the screen in that lower left screen area . . . the lines will change . common sense tells me this is screen damage . When I touch the screen [ gently ] and putting no pressure on the hinge and any connectors ect. . . the lines change . Is this screen damage or the wires in the hinge ? There is no visible damage to the screen .

The LCD panel is a sandwich of two glass plates. the back one is a bit more brittle and often cracks before the top one which you can see. The reason the back plate is more sensitive has to do with the processing it gets. It is etched and plated with metal oxide traces which route in an X-Y structure the signals which turn-on/off the discreet pixels.

So with that understanding the lines you see are the micro fractures within that plate signal pathways so the signals are being interfered with. As you touch or shift the display you are allowing the connections to make and break and depending on what the line was to drive, you’ll see different colors or just black.
