iPhone 7 No modem firmware

Hi, my Iphone 7 suddenly started showing “no service” and no number after modem firmware, I went to an affiliated apple store and they told me that it is a common problem where apple has set up a free repair program.

However, my phone was not accepted because there is a small crack on the screen, the size of a grain of rice (which has been there since way before the problem showed up). Their excuse was that it could be “my fault” and is not legible for the repair program.

Of course I bought a new phone, but I still do want to repair this one (for: fun, experience and e-waste reasons). There are some video’s on YT of people doing this, but I would like to follow a manual of some kind.

Is there a place where I can find such manual? Or could someone tell me: what to look for, how to diagnose the problem (burnt chip/capacitor…) and how to replace this with what parts?

PS: The repair shop offered me a screen fix for €150, then I would be accepted in the repair program, which is ridiculous… ahahah

The problem you are facing might be unfixable. There are two models of this phone, Intel and Qualcomm. Apples free repair program for this problem only applies to the Qualcomm boards.

Apple do not repair your phone on this program they give you a refurbished one.

In my experience there would only be about 1% chance of fixing this problem. Apple made a design flaw in this model where the flex of the phone causes a short in the baseband PMU which intern sends a high voltage to the baseband CPU causing it to stop functioning.

The baseband CPU cannot be replaced as it is married to the CPU. The 1% chance you might have is to replace the baseband PMU and remove and re-ball the baseband CPU. To achieve this you will need to be an experienced microsolderer and have all the equipment necessary for the repair.

So there is no other alternative for me? As I only have amateur equipment (soldering iron and soldering hot air gun).

@Wolf Vierbergen If you have got a hot air station and soldering iron you could try replacing the baseband PMU. You will need to determine if it is Qualcomm or Intel. While you wait for it to arrive you can watch some videos on YouTube regarding replacement.
