Screen problem with vertical lines

My Macbook Pro screen for seemingly no reason has developed a problem where it will intermittently be covered in vertical lines (see pics). I can fix it temporarily by closing the screen and opening it again but it will soon return. I think it’s a hardware issue because when connected to an external monitor it’s fine. Any ideas what’s causing it and how it can be fixed (and the cost)?

Sadly your internal display is damaged. Its likely something heavy was placed on it or it got a good bang.

Basically, the LCD panel has microscopic metal oxide traces which go to the discreet pixel similar on how cloth is woven (X & Y lines) here the bottom edge lines got damaged where the connection to the logic takes place. When the edges come close together it will work for a while as you noted.

Yoiks! I have the same problem and consider replacing the display. But I am going to be on the road for 3 months on a trip that starts this coming week. I can live with the line on the screen until I get back. But my worry is the problem may get worse with more lines appearing and the screen slowly dieing that is not good on a trip! So I have a question:

Once this problem appears, how likely is it that the display will continue to get worse with more lines appearing and/or other glitches, and if so how long will I most likely be able to continue to use the laptop with this LCD screen (days? weeks? months?) until it is kaput?

@hundredmeterskoven - Think it like Cancer! Doctors can’t tell you much as the condition decides your fate!

If you need the computer I wound get to an Apple Store to see if they can rush the repair. Or, look at renting a system if that’s possible.

I wouldn’t depend on it on a trip as the bouncing will make it worse!

Thanks Dan for your helpful prognosis. It is very useful for me to get the advice of a knowleadgable and experienced person like yourself on whether the problem with the LCD will just stay the same or most likely get worse, as you suggest.
