Yes this iMac can support up to 32GB of DDR4-2400 or 2133 unbuffered, non-ecc RAM, and as long as the SSD is SATA (a straight 2.5” SSD or a NGFF with the proper adapter) it will read and work. Apple’s website will only say what amount of RAM and storage they offer for that particular model.

Fair warning, I’ve been successful with these so far and I’d still rather not do this one. So buckle up and good luck!

Stick with the Apple blade SSD or OWC SSD, M.2 SSD's don't play well in iMac's. I've had to pull out quite a few.

@danj The price is what makes it so appealing, sadly; ignorance doesn't help. I can get a 1TB NVMe SSD (and the adapter) for my 2014 15" rMBP for less than the actual Apple 1TB SSD, and upgrade from the original 512GB SATA based SSD. The problem is sellers don't disclose it doesn't work for obvious reasons.

Surprisingly this model still uses 2.5" SATA drives. I was shocked the first time I cracked one of these buggers open.

It will also work with a M.2 SSD in a 2.5" SATA adapter, but only the SATA/AHCI ones with the B and M key. It was a customer's request because he already had the M.2 SSD. I didn't think it would work. Thermals are probably messed up though

Pluggin in a mSATA SSD into the SATA connection than plugging in a 2.5" SSD into the SATA port So while odd that's not a biggy. The real issue is the custom port on the other side!

But didn't they skip the proprietary port on the 21.5" that year? Haha honestly asking cause I swear I don't remember seeing it on the back of this model.

Edit: Rocketyard reports that the stock standard version did not have the proprietary port, but it was on models that were configured with a fusion drive.
