20 Inch Cinema Display strobing constantly with 2018 MBP

So I just bought a Benfei USB C (male) to DVI-D (female) adapter (Very positive reviews for this use specifically) to use between my dad’s 2004 20 inch Cinema Display and my 2018 MacBook Pro, however, the screen works as normal for about 7 seconds and then just strobes constantly. I can still see my cursor and drag windows over i.e. use the monitor, apart from the strobing is an absolute eyesore - like lord forbid someone with epilepsy were to use this setup or else apple might have a lawsuit on their hands it’s that bad. I have tried resetting the SMC, booting up in different sequences, and even tested the adapter with other devices, and other cables connecting to other devices!

I know the display should be working fine as it has worked previously for my dad on his 2007 iMac with a combination of dongles I can track down if really needed.

What makes this even weirder, is that the display works PERFECTLY when plugged into my IPad Air 2020 with the same adapter, no strobing or flickering or delay, nothing of the sort.

Please help me troubleshoot this I’d really love to be able to sort myself a little setup with my MBP and the Cinema Display, especially with all the online Uni at the minute!

With the MacBook Pro disconnected from the MagSafe as well as anything else other than the display does the strobing stop or reduced?

Ok well, I was previously testing it with simply my USB C-DVI dongle and USB C charger plugged in to no avail. However after reading your comment I went back and tried plugging and unplugging the charger with the monitor already plugged in and on, mid strobe, and it suddenly worked holding a stable image. However it only lasted until I closed and reopened my MacBook.

Looking now, I would say there is a slight difference in strobe speed when I plug / unplug the cable, generally slower when plugged in. However it isn’t a very noticeable change and it may simply be placebo.

I’m suspecting you have a grounding issue. Either the outlet you are using is mis-wired or the MacBook charger or the displays power supply has issues.

Time to first check your AC outlet with a outlet checker 3-Wire Receptacle Tester

You might want to get a USB-C Power Tester as well

Oh okay thank you for the answer!

While I'm certainly not an expert on the matter it does just seem strange to me that the display works with an iPad but not a MacBook, if possible could you explain why you think this may be?

Also, would there be any way to test the outlet / power supplies before having to buy anything extra?

Really appreciate your help!

Alright I'll have a look at getting some UK ones, any tips on what I should be looking for? Or would that be better suited to a YouTube search?

What are the odds I could fix this with a new power supply block?

@lewee71 - Grounding issues are tricky! As you need to isolate out which part of the AC power services has a hot ground. Could be the outlet is mis-wired or has another device plugged in which is shorting to ground. It's also possible the breaker panel is not properly wired or grounded physically.

Then you have the devices in question! As both are plugged into an AC outlet it could be the power cord is bad or flipped if the grounding pin was removed so the hot and neutral lines are reversed on one of the devices. As the two devices are interconnected via a video cable you can then have a ground crossover which then drives power across the ground or data lines the other device is not expecting.

So as we can see there's too many possibilities!

So after some deliberating, I’m considering buying a new power supply brick for £30, but I wouldn’t want to be 30 quid down with a broken monitor still, just out of curiosity - what do you reckon the chances are of this being fixed by simply swapping out the power supply?
