digital voice recorder died. how to retrieve many files. err message

my olympus vn-4100pc digital voice recorder is stuck. pressed record but got an ‘err’ message on screen. buttons no longer work. attached cable to recorder and put usb into port of computer but not read. have 14 years of conversations with people no longer on this earth so emotionally attached to retrieving all those files.
