Why wont my laptop stay charged with out having to be plugged in at all times ?

Likely the battery needs replacing. It is 8 years old.

Hi,
To add to the answer, if the laptop has Win 10 installed, create a Win 10 battery report.
This will give you the status of the battery.
Very helpful.
