Any advice on installing a SSD? iMac. EMC 2210.

Any advice on installing a SSD for iMac Intel 20” EMC 2210? I have purchased the SSD Upgrade bundle/crucial 1 TB. Plan is to have my son and I work on this iMac to have this experience together and have him use the iMac for school.

For this iMac, you’ll need an SSD with SATA II fallback support - the pre-2011 models do not support SATA III. In addition, you’ll also need a 2.5>3.5” SSD caddy. Once you mount the drive in the machine, tape the temperature sensor to the drive - not the adapter. Just make sure you check with the school if the maximum version of MacOS this can take (10.11 W/2GB RAM) will work for you. Tell them it’s an old machine you used to use regularly and want to make sure so they know why.

Refer to this guide to see how to change the drive. As long as the SSD supports SATA II you’re good - SATA I compatibility is optional.

If it's pretty much just a situation where they'll be issuing G Suite logins it may not be an issue but if there's local applications involved, then you may need a newer Mac. Even if you find it's too old to use, it's still a good learning experience for your son and it isn't completely useless - he can still use it for things like word processing.

Any suggestions about formatting the SSD?

@ebujans You'd want to use HFS Extended (Journaled). It MAY be limited for school use due to the limits on how far you can upgrade MacOS on it, so keep that in mind.

These can only run up to MacOS 10.11, so you may not want to spend much just in case the school requires something newer.

@danj any recommendations for an SSD for OP? I usually do not need to rely on these fallback modes so Fixed III is not as bad.

I'm thinking this may be just a bit too old - may be better off with a used 2012 or newer. That said we're also in a situation where they may need to make accomodations so it may not be an issue now but they may demand something newer later.

I recommend using Samsung 860 EVO which is a auto sense drive so it matches the systems SATA ports I/O speed in this case SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) and can be used on newer systems at the full SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) I/O rate in these older SATA based systems.

Or use the fixed SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) OWC Mercury Electra 3G SSD's

500GB OWC 3G SSD kit

1.0TB OWC 3G SSD kit

@danj What are your thoughts on the school being picky about this being a 10.11 max Mac? I know my district was cheap internally to the point they could do it, but I also graduated when we were still using Windows XP and MacOS 10.5-10.6, so my perspective is old (and it was years before the pandemic/mandatory online class laws). Probably not an issue if they use the G Suite like many districts, but local applications may be an issue since 10.11 has been old news for *years*.

I suspect they'll make the accommodation for now, but require a 2012+ in the future. The Core 2 won't be an issue for this application (there's no chance the OP's kid will notice) but the problem is the age of the OS. Not trying to scare the OP; arming them with the right information.
