When I remove my logic board there is a short flat tag (about 30mm long , 8mm wide) standing up from the back of the keyboard in a central position with two bare connectors on the end. What is it and does it need to be positioned somewhere when I re-assemble?

OK, I see what you’re struggling with. Jump to Step 22 in this guide MacBook Pro 15" Unibody 2010晚期逻辑板更换 This is the keyboard backlight cable. So yes, you do want to connect it.
I’m not sure here but one of your pictures look like the end of the cable was cut off did you damage it?
