installing HDD from another MacBook

Trying to install a HDD from one Macbook Air to another without losing and data.

All steps online seem to just guide you when dealing with a blinking folder.

Just want to get thru this without losing the original data on the HDD.

Which options should I choose?

Restore from Time Machine Backup?

Reinstall OS X?

Get Help Online?

Disk Utility?

If they are the same computers, is a plug and play task. If they are not you have to consider SATA and PCI-Express SSD and EFI version, new version of EFI chip only read new apple file system.

The transfer is from an A1466 to an A1465 model. The A1466 model was damaged but the SSD seemed fine. I want to install it into the A1465 and hope to keep all information on it. Currently after installing it I get the blinking folder.

Thank you for your help.

What year is the a1465 model. It needs to be 2013 or newer to definitely fit in the MacBook.

Tony - Review this guide compare your two systems SSD's Apple Proprietary SSDs - Ultimate Guide to Specs & Upgrades make sure they are compatible.

The next issue is the version of MacOS the drive has. If you hadn't upgraded your OS to High Sierra or newer then your system is still using HFS+ file system, High Sierra and newer uses APFS which also requires the systems firmware to be upgraded as your older firmware (OS) has no idea how to read there newer file system.

Two ways to go:

  1. Boot from and external USB source. Hard drive with a system on it and a USB to SATA adapter and recover your data from the internal drive
  2. Install your new drive and do an internet recovery to install the new system. Put your old drive in an OWC Envoy Pro enclosure and then access your data https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MAU3...
