How to get the keyboard and mousepad to work?

I have been working on this computer for quite some time. The problem is the Keyboard and mouse pad on the laptop will not work. They are plugged into the motherboard. I can plug a keyboard into the usb slot; but it does tend to act up. When I plug a mouse to it, it will light up but will not be responsible. I can use it if I put my finger right up to the sensor of the mouse. Left and right click works just fine. This portable mouse and keyboard I have been using works on other computer just fine. When plugging a flash drive into it it works fine.

Here are some other work I have done to the computer. I have replaced the Cmos and flash the Bios. I have reapplied thermal paste to the processor. I took the HDD out and clean it of viruses on another computer. I have even checked for rootkits on the computer I am working on. I have tried updating the the keyboard and mouse drivers. I have tried, but failed to update the chipset. I got all my drivers and update from the Dell website for this specific computer.

There is no corrosion. There is no signs of liquid damage. The computer will boot into window just fine now that I have removed the viruses. I just cannot get the keyboard and touchpad on the laptop to work and usb input devices does not work correctly besides flash drive. I have not replaced the keyboard and touchpad yet. I didn’t want to put the money into it if I can’t fix it. I want to assume it is the motherboard; but everything else works beside what I have mentioned. It puzzles me. Since I am so close to fixing it, I do not want to give up. Any advice will help.

This is my first time on this site so hopefully everything answering and navigating process will go smoothly.

Does the keyboard work when in the BIOS menu screen? Yes. Then it is a Windows problem.

Again, if yes, then it follows that the mouse not working is also a Windows issue.

If you have not already upgrade to Windows 10.

It is free from legitimate versions of Windows 7.

Let us know how it goes.

The usb keyboard does work in bios; the laptop keyboard still does not work. It possibly cannot not be a window 7 problem since I have taken the HDD out; install it into another computer; and ran window to get rid of the viruses on it; and the usb keyboard and mouse work perfectly fine then on that other computer running that same windows. I could still reinstall windows even though I have reinstall the driver. It could actually fix the problem. I do have my doubt that this is the actual problem since it work find on the other computer; but it will not hurt to try. I will have try this tomorrow.

I wipe the HDD and reinstalled windows on this HDD on another computer. I put the HDD back into the laptop. The Keyboard and touchpad still do not work. Now the Usb keyboard and mouse does not work in window at all. I can still use the keyboard in Bios. This is either a motherboard problem or a corrupt Bios. I am lending towards motherboard being the problem. What are your thoughts or anyone's thoughts.

Hi Chase,

Here are some steps to follow:

1.) Copy your Windows 7 installer to the flash drive - you did say, "When plugging a flash drive into it works fine." so you have one. Use "Rufus" v3.9 to make bootable installer disk.

2.) Boot up laptop with the flash drive and fresh install W7 on the laptop.

3.) Once W7 installs and settles down use some thing like "IOBit Driver Booster" to update drivers. The drivers on Dell's web site will be old.

O.K. How does everything work now?

* Keyboard

* USB keyboard

*Trackpad

* USB mouse

* etc.

Just to clarify your comment about installing Windows on your hard drive on another computer. This is a "no, no"!

Why? Because the drivers installed will all be different! There is the problem.
