I bought a refurbished MacBook Pro a few years ago. It started to run slow recently so I want to buy larger RAM. I realized only one memory slot is filled, with an 8GB. When checking for compatibility, my processor isn't listed. Would this matter when purchasing new RAM? Also, if the Apple support page lists max 8GB, does that mean I can have two 8GB, or have to have two 4GB? Thanks for any help.

If your machine is indeed a 2011 15” MBP, the max RAM is 16GB - two 8GB sticks.

RAM may not help you that much but an SSD would give dramatic results.

So if the machine will take 16 GB of RAM, each slot will take a 8GB chip. As I understand it, you have one 8GB. The slot that is in appears to be good. Try the chip in the other slot first, if it works you know you can add another 8GB chip. What is the speed of the chip you have. Let us know if it fails in the second slot as there are things we can try.
