Why is screen totally black after turning on but capslock light is on?

When I switch on my laptop the screen is totally black. I have tried to fix by removing the battery and pressing the power button for 30 seconds but hasn't fix it. Please help me to fix this.

connect a external monitor and check if you are getting anything on the display

This is usually loose RAM on an HP, or in some cases a failed module. Remove the battery, the main cover below the hard drive cover and reseat the SODIMM module/s. If it persists, they're bad and need to be replaced.

If neither of these help, the motherboard is dead - common on these "low cost" HP laptops.
