The volume suddenly went to mute and then would switch back to sound. Does it quickly almost like a blinking effect.

What is the model number of the TV?
When you say "went to mute" does it show the mute icon on the screen or was it just that the volume slider went to zero?
Is it occurring continually or randomly?
Try removing the batteries from the remote control unit to either confirm or eliminate it as the possible cause of the problem
