MacBook Pro 2011 doesn't sleep when lid is closed.

I replaced my keyboard backlit and speakers (all), recently after watching ifixit and other youtube videos guidance. Everything went smooth, backlit was mesmerising for few days, until few days ago, I realised the laptop won’t sleep when the lid is closed. It eventually does due to Mac OS auto sleep after no activity, but it doesn’t wake either when lid is opened. I reopened back cover, changed hard drive cable from 2012 to 2011, re-opened and closed battery connector and indicator, all other connections, checked magnetic field on screen and on top of SD card socket. Everything is fine. I still don’t get the MacBook Pro to sleep/wake with the lid mechanism.

I find it annoying because after replacing a part, a new part or repair is required. I can keep going, but the battery is draining when I close my laptop during night time. It was not like that before, it stayed more or less same during whole night because it was sleeping. I am worried if this issue may have effect on the board sometime in future.

Can anyone help in this regard?

Update (10/19/2019)

Okay @arbaman and @danj, looks like I have to get an indicator cable replacement. I will get back on that and if it functioned properly.

Yes, the answer is the right solution. I replaced the battery indicator connector with a new one purchased online. Now the lid mechanism works perfect. It sleeps the mbp when closed, and wakes it up when open. Thank you @arbaman

I’d imagine if you took the trouble to replace speakers and KB backlight it was for a good reason..was it liquid damaged ? Check the small sensor connector next to the battery, it’s a bit fragile and might have been damaged when you removed the board. If there was liquid damage the sleep sensor/battery indicator may have been damaged electrically too.

Not because they were damaged, but they looked used up, and I accidentally tore the backlit connector. I got some cheap parts from AliExpress and installed them.

"Check the small sensor connector next to the battery"

Yes, this is the connector to the battery indicator I assume, and I opened/closed too. The lights on side of the MBP when the round button is clicked are very dim when the lid is closed, but when Mac is ON and lid is open, they are very bright. So, I assume it's got something with the sleep indicator or the I/R sensor.

What do you suggest?

@Vijay Kanta Led lights shouldn't be very dim when lid is closed, that might point to a malfunctioning. Since it's the only part that makes sense replacing, I'd try a replacement.

@Vijay Kanta - Yes, the battery checker is telling you there is a short within the cable or the logic board connector. You'll likely need to replace the assembly and you might need to repair the connector if the pins are damaged.

Just a question. Will this faulty cable or connection have any effect on the thermals? Because my CPU now hits 99-100 degrees celsius on high load. It used to be around 90-93 stable even during heaviest loads. All parts are fine, but this CPU overheating is again bugging me.

Yes! SMC will put the system in to Safe Mode lowering the CPU's clock (you can see this looking at Activity Monitor - kernal_task using lots of the CPU) so the system does not overheat. This can happen when SMC can't access either a thermal or voltage sensor. You can see the thermal sensors via TG Pro. The voltage sensors are seen via diagnostics or via a DVM probing the test points on the logic board.

Hello Vijay, I need your help..

I have a Macbook Pro 15' 2011

I cleaned it and I did Heat Sink Replacement .But after that the doesn't sleep when lid is closed :(

I checked all cables and battery charge sensors, and they are functioning normally. Did the imam move?

I tried to do this test procedure(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRcWeVTy...), but I was unsuccessful, it seems there is no magnet there.

What do you recommend me to try? Which component do you replace to get back up and running? This (https://pt.aliexpress.com/item/400026515...) ?

Hello @luisribas I had to change my battery indicator. The one you mentioned from ali express is the correct one. However mine being 13", I had got the appropriate one and it worked. I am not sure if the same will work on a 15" one.

Can you do search in aliexpress the 15" one, and try that out.
