pc slipped out of my hands...no power light

Block Image

I installed some larger memory inside my desktop pc and when I was sitting it down it slipped out of my hands. It wasn’t high up, less than a foot and only the rear of the pc hit . But when I try to turn it on the fan starts/runs but there is no longer a power light that used to come on when I pushed power button. Plus there is no image on screen. How can I figure out what happened and fix it? I am interested in fixing this myself since I have plenty of time and ambition. I also work on computers some and fairly knowledgeable, but no expert.

Will someone tell me what/how to fix this please?

Thank you ! !

@slowboy any make model etc. on this computer? Hitting the rear could have caused issues with the connectors to the motherboard. Post some images of the motherboard, power supply etc. with your question. That way we can see what you see. 在已经存在的问题里加入图片

Of course you did disconnect all of the wires coming from the PSU and reconnect it and checked for obvious damage? "it on the fan starts/runs" is that the fan on the PSU?

Hi @slowboy ,

First thing to check is if the power supply is OK and that it is supplying all of the voltages necessary to run the PC, not just the fans.

Here’s a link that describes how to test a PSU.

If you have a HDD (not an SSD) installed, can you hear it spin up when you try to start the PC?

If not the PC may not even be starting.

If the PSU is OK, next is to remove the RAM and restart the PC and check if you can hear any error beeps, (I’m assuming that the PC has an internal speaker connected to the motherboard). If you can’t then there is a problem on the motherboard as the PC is not progressing to a point where it fails POST (Power On Self Test) due to the missing RAM.

When working inside a PC ensure that the power cord is disconnected until you are ready to start on whatever test you wish to perform, then reconnect the power cord. Nothing worse than working on it with the power still connected.

Thanks for your reply/suggestions. I've tried a different PSU and had the same results.

When I restart the pc it has no beep/s. I did remove all RAM before I restarted it.

How do I know, or tell/find out if it does have an internal speaker connected to the motherboard? I've looked at the mother board but see nothing resembling a speaker. Maybe I just don't know what this speaker looks like?

Can you open this link and tell me if this PSU Tester will work?

Hi @slowboy ,

Check if there are any header pins marked "spkr". (should be 4 pins or 2 pins at a 4 pin spacing apart if that makes any sense e.g pins are either IIII or I I

.You may have to connect your own speaker

Reading what it can test it should be OK to use but if you tried a new known working PSU perhaps save your money and don't get it.

Is this a regular speaker that the pins are for or just something that will beep? If it 'is' a regular speaker, where would it be mounted at?

Hi @slowboy ,

Don't know your desktop but some have speakers that just beep and others have an internal audio speaker.

If yours didn't have internal audio (relies on external speakers) then connecting a speaker just for the beeps will do. Not all motherboards came with the speakers but most have the speaker header pins still on the motherboard to connect a speaker to. Do a detailed search of the board as it will be written on there above/below the vacant pins as to their function. It is usually found where the power light, HDD light, power button etc wires coming from the front cover of the case are connected to the motherboard.

This is just trying to eliminate the possibility that the PC is starting without showing a power light.

If you connect a speaker and hear nothing then there's a fair chance it hasn't started.

You didn't say if you heard the HDD spin up or not.

Does the CD drive eject work OK when you press the eject button?

These are more signs that the motherboard is functioning of a fashion

When I dropped the back end all cables were plugged in the back. I was attempting to set pc tower on computer desk shelf on the side/end of the desk and that's when it slipped out of my hand. It seemed to have maybe dropped/hit on the cables/chords.
