Having a Problem Tightening Replacement Keyboard Screws

Hi, I'm in the middle of replacing my keyboard in my Early 2013 Macbook Pro and could use some advice -

I ripped the old keyboard off and popped out all of the rivets. I put the new keyboard on and began screwing in the 50 #000 screws. Unfortunately, I've found that about half the screws will not tighten. It seems to fully go into the screw hole, but it's not tightening (i.e., the screw will just turn forever).

I have some ideas, but would like another opinion:

  • Fiill holes with plastic filler and screw into them while before it hardens
  • Tape the keyboard down
  • Screw into the holes, tape over them
  • I'd rally hate to super glue the keyboard down, but I would do it if necessary - I really only need this to last me for a few more months. My concern with gluing would be the mess and the temperature when the CPU spins.

So… any thoughts?

Thanks!

Try using a heat resistant glue like this one:

Thanks for the response -

Would you suggest this for filling in the holes then screwing the screws in while it's still wet? Or just gluing the keyboard directly to the case?

You can do both. I've always felt that there were way to many screws in these boards. I would think every other hole should be sufficient. Now if it will take a screw do it. If there is a span, then I would glue it. After you finish use a keyboard skin to both protect it from spills and help spread the pressure on individual keys.

Thanks for the help - went ahead and ordered that glue, so I'm on hold until Sunday.

If I could do it over again, I think I'd skip straight to ordering a used uppercase assembly with keyboard already installed. They're pretty cheap considering the hours saved for the teardown.

@nachojim I agree. The keyboards with 86 screws are pain enough but doable, but the ones with pegs really are a PITA
