Upgrading hard drive and logic board in an iMac?

I've got a mid-2014 21.5” with the dual-core i5 1.4ghz processor. I acquired it at an auction, and it has no hard drive installed. The logic board is also faulty, and needs replacing.

I've done a fair bit of googling, but I'm afraid the technical aspects of upgrading this particular model escape me.

  • Can the logic board of this model be upgraded to the more powerful quad-core processors for the same year/size unit? Thinking the 2.5 or 2.7 gHz i5. Not sure if they are compatible, let alone the same size to fit into the unit. If I do upgrade the logic board to a more powerful model, will I have to upgrade other components as well for it to work?
  • Can the hard drive be upgraded to a 1 or 2TB HDD? I've read that there's not much hope of using anything other than the 500GB apple hard drive provided for this specific model. If I can't use a typical fat HDD due to the case, what model hard drive would you recommend?

I greatly appreciate your help with this!

Sorry there’s no CPU upgrade option here, this logic board has a soldered CPU Mid 2014 21.5” iMac.

Even upgrading the logic board is limited here to the non-4 K boards. The only quad core board that might work is 21.5” iMac 2.8 GHz Core i5 (Late 2015) The logic board is Apple P/N 661-02984.

I can’t tell you if it will work or not, Apple altered a few things so it might not work Mid ‘14 Display Assembly 661-00156 Vs Late ‘15 display Assembly 661-02989 As you can see the displays are not interchangeable. Which means the connections are different between the display and the logic board. You may need to also swap out the display.

OK, so upgrading the logic board is off the table can I at least install or upgrade the drives??

As it turns out Apple produced two versions of the logic board SATA drive only or support for a blade SSD in either the SSD only or the Fusion Drive models. So assuming you have the dual drive support version of the logic board then you can install a bade SSD following this guide iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2805 Blade SSD Replacement and here is the guide to figure out which drive to use The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs jump down to the Generation 3 listings.

If your systems logic board does not offer the connector, then your only choice is the 2.5” SATA drive bay iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2805 Hard Drive Replacement Here you can use either a 2.5” SATA HHD or a SSD drive. The iFixit kit offers a 1 TB SSD iMac Intel 21.5" (Late 2012-2019) SSD Upgrade Kit and if you want a HDD you can go with any of these Seagate FireCuda SSHD which is a better performer than a standard HDD. You can go to a 2 TB drive!

There are also larger SSD sizes! Samsung 860 EVO 2 & 4 TB
