Touch ID failed after battery replacement

I did the correct procedure, removing battery cable, then the 3 connectors with the screen. Put in the new batt and put everything back together. Turn on - no Touch ID :(

Seems I was quite unfortunate here as everyone else having Touch ID problems have done a screen change and/or usually not disconnected a battery before doing a fix.

The home button’s working fine. I’ve also tried disassembling again and undoing the home button ribbon connector then reconnecting and reassembling… still no dice.

Any suggestions? Perhaps I can order a cable and swap it out. I’m aware from reading other posts, that a home button swap would need to be performed by Apple to retain Touch ID.

Try reinstalling the touch ID button on the old screen if you can and see if it’s still working. Chances are:

  • You damaged the button cable, it may happen and it’s hard to spot damage on such a small scale without a microscope.
  • You got a screen with a faulty touch ID connector, that may happen too, I got a few I had to rework because the amount of solder used by the manufacturer was insufficient

Unfortunately the cable itself is sandwiched between the various lcd layers and can’t be simply replaced.

It was just a battery replacement; the screen is still the original!

I just wonder if it was during opening the iPhone.

@eddyp Heaven knows why I thought about the screen too, but that's when the two things are most often associated. The only other things I can think of are connector and socket on the board to be checked for integrity and components around the area you worked to lift connector, did you use a tool that may have caused pry damage ?

I can understand the assumption when it’s involved in nearly all the other cases.

That’s why I’m feeling a bit sorry for myself though - I’ve not found any other instances online of this problem after a batt change.

I did use my scalpel a bit (gently) as the ends of the spudge just chewed off. It was replaced by apple before and the adhesive was really strong so had quite a job getting it out. I may have nicked something although didn’t see any obvious signs of damage. Ah well.

Thanks for your input.

@eddyp If it was a metal scalpel there's a chance some smaller component got damaged in the process. You'll have to remove the silicon coating and use good light and magnification to be really able to see something. Wish you luck.
