Transfering files from dead MacBook to another MacBook using enclosure

Hi! Recently my macbook (due to water damage according to the apple store) completely died- the tech guy said that they could repair it, but there was no gurantee the data would be all there when repaired so he said I could try and use an enclosure to recover the files (link:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TQW...)

So I ordered it and followed the steps and plugged my dead mac’s hard drive into it and then the adapter into my sister’s (perfectly fine) computer. However, my files did not show up in disk utility or computer- could it be that my my hard drive is damaged beyond repair and I should just repair my old computer with the files? Or could I have done something wrong or something? Please help!!

Update (01/27/2019)

@mayer @danj @aactech Yes I was careful! It doesn’t show up anywhere- not on disk utility, terminal, or my desktop. Does this mean the files aren’t recoverable? Should I give up and have the apple techs repair the comp and start fresh? My sister has the same mac as me i think, and she was running yosemite and i was running high sierra.

Hi Lucy,

Were you careful to discharge any static from your hands and not touch any of the circuits when you removed the hard drive and while installing it in the external case?

Did the drive show up in the Disk Utility but just not the files?

If so it may just be corruption of the file structure. If the files are very important a local techie may be able to help you. One with data recovery experience on MAC's!

For others reading this - MAC's are VERY, VERY fussy about parts and are very tricky to service. Unless you are a techie I would not touch them as you'll probably end up spending even more money.

@mayer @mike @danj Yes I was very careful! It doesn't show up anywhere- not on terminal, disk utility or my desktop. My sister has a mid 2015 mac and was running yosemite, I was running high sierra i believe.

Hold on! If you where using High Sierra on your system and your sisters Mac running is Yosemite her system won’t see or have any way to access the files from your SSD.

The issue is Apple altered the format of SSD’s in High Sierra! Your drive is running APFS unlike your sisters Mac who’s SSD is running HFS+ under Yosemite and has no knowledge on how to handle APFS.

Your data is safe for now! You’ll need to make a decision here.

Are you planning on getting a new Mac? If you do you’ll then need to make sure its running High Sierra and then you’ll be able to recover your files from your drive. The other option is upgrading your sisters system to High Sierra. Just be careful here as your sister will be pi55ed off if you mess her system up too! ;-}

Unless the drive is completely dead the files will all still be there . You just can’t see them. see Dan’s reply.

@aactech @danj I am going to try backing up my sisters computer with an external drive, then upgrading it to high sierra then using the enclosure to restore the files- do you think this would work?

完成的

That should work
