A simple reset could clear the error. Power down the washer, unplug it and press the start button for at least 5 seconds. Plug it back in, power it up, and try to operate the washer.
If the washer still doesn't work, there are a few things that could be wrong. The top loader washers have a magnet in the door latch, and replacing the door latch will fix it if that's what is wrong. The door could also be bent or have bent hinges, causing an alignment issue and related damage. Sometimes the whole door needs replacing. Also, the door lock could be damaged. Front load washers suffer lock and latch damage much more than top loaders.
