Why is my Mac screen doing this?

Having some issues with a grey vertical line intermittently on the screen. When I touch around the actual screen it seems to make the problem occur more. When I leave it upright and open on a flat surface sometimes it will go away.

Sadly you banged your systems lid or stat something heavy on it damaging the LCD panels connections to the ribbon cable. We call this failure a TAB error. When the fragile vaporized metal on the LCD glass has pulled away breaking the connections.

To fix this you’ll need to replace the display assembly following this guide: MacBook Air 13" Mid 2011 Display Assembly Replacement and here’s the needed part: MacBook Air 13" (Late 2010-Mid 2011) Display Assembly

Ouch! That's gonna be expensive...

As a cheaper alternative can I just replace the LCD panel instead of the entire display?

Sorry, it's not really cheaper ;-{

The problem is you'll need to replace quite a few pieces as you'll damage them in the process.

You'll also need quite a few tools and even afterwards it won't be as neat as the edges will be nicked up and you'll likely have some damaged backlight sheets.

To give you an idea how messy this can be take a look at this guide: MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown

I'll do the older MacBook Unibody LCD's, I won't do the Air's or the newer Retina's.
