Trackpad click not working consistently

About a month ago the trackpad stopped being consistently responsive to clicks. It still does respond to clicks along the right side of the pad, but on the middle and left sides it almost doesn’t work at all unless you apply some considerable force — not a ton, but more than is customary. The touchpad works normally otherwise — moving cursor around and tapping works across the entire face of the pad.

Wondering if this is a situation that requires replacing the touchpad or if I may have a loose connector or something.

Check to see if the battery is swollen and putting pressure on the bottom of the trackpad.

Well it is several months later (because it took me a long time to save up for a replacement battery) but this was the cause. The battery had indeed swollen a bit. In fact, the battery had been in poor shape for a long time before this, holding roughly 10-15 minutes of charge at a time and macOS had long since been telling me to replace it.

I ordered the kit from ifixit and took care of it last night. The touchpad works like new, now. Thanks, @mayer, for suggesting this as it hadn't occurred to me at all.

It is always worth the try to see if the cable is loose but if you determine it is fully and properly connected it is probably time to replace the trackpad.
