My battery won't charge anymore

Hello,

Few months ago, I opened my system for cleanup, especially the fan since it gathered a lot of dust. Obviously I unplugged the battery to avoid any electrical damage during the process.

After finishing the cleanup (taking out the fan, cleaning it by taking it apart and putting it back on). The battery isn’t detected anymore. When I plug the MagSafe charger in (original MagSafe), the MagSafe LED turns on, but only Green.

After trying to unplug and plug the battery again, SMC & NVRAM resets, I just gave up and thought I needed a new battery after all, because mine was over a 1000 cycles anyways.

I got my new battery few days ago, and upon plugging it, the same problem remains. The MagSafe charger indicator LED never turns Amber, just Green. The battery indicator on the side of the computer don’t turn on (I’ve unplugged it since, but left it on the computer). I tried the different resets cited above, cleaned the motherboard with a toothbrush and alcohol , cleaned the charging port but in vain.

The only change now is that when I go to energy saving settings, the computer shows that battery is charged at 0%.

I can’t even get the icon on the status bar as the option un-checks automatically whenever I do.

Any suggestions would be welcome!

Hi @ajcooke01 ,

I did a coconut battery test, and .. well results are rather surprising, here's a screen

How did you clean the dust build up inside? Did you use a can of can’ed air or use a vacuum?

Hi, i didn't really clean in depth the motherboard, i just used a dry microfiber cloth , rubbing gently dirty places. For the fan, after taking it out , i tore it appart to clean it from the inside and used the microfiber cloth, and a tooth brush. No vaccums nor can'ed air were used.

Micro-cloths can snag the small SMT components on the logic board so it's not something I would have use here. Vacuums can create a static discharge which can zap your delicate electronics so that too is not good.

The best thing is to use a soft paint brush and a can of can'ed air. Here we can us the brush to loosen the dust and dirt for the parts using care and then using the can'ed air to blow the stuff away in short bursts. You can also use compressed air just be careful it does not have oil in the air stream (get a good air filter and make sure its clean).

@marouanezou - Where did you buy the battery?

Hi Dan, i Bought the battery on Aliexpress since it was the only place that would ship it at a reasonable price to my country. Amazon and Ifixit doesnt ship to my country, et i couldn't find anything locally

As @marouanezou said, try a different charger and a different outlet. Then, if that does not work we should attempt to test the battery on the Mac.

Sounds like it might be a Logic Board issue to me, but I am not great at explaining such type of issue. @danj or @mayer might be able to a better job at explaining this. Sorry about that!

I have to quote @danj : As the MagSafe cord LED is lighting up that tells us the charger is getting AC power and the DC side is present as well.

This is likely a component on the logic board has gone bad, might be the IC, a resistor, a mosfet or whatever, but it's undoubtedly a component level issue. Charger just takes care of supplying the DC in..when green light is there its job is done ;)

@ajcooke01 - What was one of the things I posted in your CoconutBattery guide? What do you think it means after checking out the snapshot marouanezou posted in his update.

完成的

@danj Where do I start, a lot of helpful things. You posted stuff about the chargers, calibrating batteries, battery checkers, oh my! All are very helpful.

Looks like we might have a little bit more then a battery problem. I doubt it is the DC In because the battery is not recognized in general. @arbaman said it really well, it is probably something along the Logic Board that’s not functioning properly. I am no good when it comes to explaining and solving that kinda stuff so I’ll let you guys take it from here.

@ajcooke01 - What did I say at the very end: 'food for thought'?

Did you figure it out?

@danj Aha, so that’s what you are getting at. I can put that in if you wish.

There are a few things I suggest, one would be have you tired using a different charger and or outlet. If that doesn’t work try replacing the battery or the charging port could have a disconnect. The charger would be the least expensive option so i would try that first.

Hi, I tried different outlets, but no different chargers, since the one i have is a brand new one from a certified apple seller. As i said in my post, i had these problems with my original battery (+1000 cycles) , et i bought an aftermarket one just to test from where the problem is coming. The same symptoms are here ( Green Magsafe LED, Not being able to SMC reset, or any kind of resets anyways) , but now , it shows me that my battery is at 0%, but is simply not charging.
