Why does my ibook crash in Safari?
I am using OS X 10.4.1.1 Safari unexpectedly quits after about five minutes every time? Any ideas what this could be? I have downloaded all the software updates but this has made no difference?
Sorted it, the problem was faulty RAM although it did not show up on the Hardware test, when I swapped the RAM out for a different chip all the crashing stopped!

It's interesting, because a Powerbook G3 I'm fixing as a pet project is showing the same behavior. I "fixed" it by using Camino, but I'll rummage in the old ram bin. Belated plus one for your creative research and nice approach at the issue.
Hi! I'd remove the battery, Airport, and extended memory, and then reset the PMU and PRAM, and see if the behavior is any different before putting parts back in.
Does the laptop's video ever become distorted or go blank? Random freezing is a symptom of the G3 video chip issue, which is a logic board flaw with no reliable fix, and if the above doesn't help, I suspect you probably have a logic board issue.
There's a slight chance you could have a bad hard drive. To test for that, use target mode to boot from an external hard drive or another Mac, and see if the problem persists. Do all testing with unnecessary parts removed from the computer so they do not complicate the test results.

Try reinstalling Safari, if that doesn't work, try reseting Safari. Also, what are you doing when it crashes? Anything flash? Or just normal web browsing?

I was looking at the ifixit web site!
So did you try any of my suggestions?
I did reinstall safari, but I am still getting the same thing,it does seem to be completely random ad or flash related as it crashes on non flash sites as well
You may want to check this article on resetting safari, it's known to work on strange situations.
Also, check Console for the logs to tell you what happened right before the crash, also check activity monitor for memory spikes, going off of what QEII suggests.
If you are using Safari 4, I suggest you go back to Safari 3, these older macs can be very slow running software at the edge of their compatibility. Safari 3 can be found in Apple Support.

I am running 10.4 on this mac so I am only using the safari that was bundled with it.
You could always try wiping your hard drive and doing a clean install of the OS. It would take some time, etc., but at the end of the day it may be the more efficient means of dealing with the problem.
This is the thing, the HD has been totally wiped and 10.4 re-installed and updated using the software updater, there is nothing else on this mac, it has got me stumped, ideally I would like to use safari as I cant stand using firefox
Has it been wiped and a clean install applied, and the problem occurred again a second time, not just the first instance? I'd put in different RAM, then reset the PMU and PRAM. If all else fails, there's always Google Chrome.
It has been wiped clean twice as well as the PMU and the PRAM being reset which made no difference.. oh btw Google Chrome doesnt work on 10.4!
Try disabling Java. It seems to crash my Safari after the latest Java security update.
Go to: Safari -> Preferences -> Security and uncheck 'Enable Java.'
If that doesn't work, you can also try unchecking Plugins and/or Javascript -- which unfortunately, is needed for a lot of websites but you can at least get an idea of what's going on!

For what it's worth, I've had trouble with Safari on a G4 iBook -- it wouldn't crash the way it does on your system, but it seemed really slow. I've ended up just using Camino instead.

Hi, right the mac is now crashing randonly after about 10 mins, I get the grey screen with the please restart your mac sign. It is not overheating as I have a temp monitor installed and it is in the 25-30 degree range when it crashes.
