Fan comes on when first starting but wont boot up

My first gen 1.1 mac pro wont boot up. When I push the power button, the light flashes on and off, the fan comes on high and just continues to run but wont boot up. It's done this once in a great while from time to time. In the past, I would hold the power button in until it shut off, then push the power bottom again and it would come on and boot. But now it just does the same thing. I push the power button, the fan comes on and just runs continuously, never booting up...

What are the diagnostic LEDs telling you? The two main things that I have seen fail on the 2006-2008 are

1. the video card (which does not appear to be your issue) and

2. the Power Supply ( which does appear to be your issue). Usually a failing power supply will begin with unexplained restarts before completely failing.

Normally, when I first push the power button, the power button light comes on and stays on, the fan comes on strong, then the fan speed then drops and I then hear a chime and it boots up.

Now, when I push the power button, the light come on and the fan comes on strong, then the power button light starts flashing, and that's it. The light will flash with the fan stays going strong and never drops.

It started this a few years ago but would only do it 1 out of 50 starts. Once in a great while it would also fail to come out of sleep mode but for the most part, worded well.

It did NOT get worse progressively. I didn't use if much for about a year. I used it one day and it worked fine. The next day it started doing what I described in paragraph 2.

After it fails to start, I either have to hold the power button in to get it to turn off so I can try it again, or unplug it and plug it back in. When I do unplug and replug, I don't have to hit the power button. It will just start as if I hit the power button, but continue to do what I describe in paragraph 2.

Sounds like #2 I listed above. Replace the power supply.
