Turned off iMac during Sierra High installation update - wont load now

Hi,

My friend accidentally turned off their iMac during the macOS Sierra High Update 10.13.3 and now the system won't load. It must of been during the system restarted and was installing Sierra High from the previous Sierra.

Is there any way to recover from this fault without losing any of the personal files on the hard drive?

Just wondering if a reinstall of Sierra won't wipe the personal data as trying to get it back to work and have never ever come across this problem.

Any suggestions much appreciated. Thxs

Hello,

It is possible to create a bootable usb or cd and trying to repair the OS.

There is also the possibility to boot on external drive with on a OS system bootable (MacOS or Linux) and to recover your personal files, in transferring on external drive.

After that, you have more case make a clean install.

You could see if the recovery partition is able to boot the system. When you restart the system press Command & R keys.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

If that fails, here's the steps to make a bootable USB drive: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive. You'll need to use a different system to create it.

And then lastly visit an Apple Store.

I can get into the maOS Utilities and have the option for 'Reinstall OS X'.

I have done tons of clean installs but as far as just using the reinstall option will this wipe the personal data off the hard drive during the reinstall?

During the reinstall of OS will all the programs and personal files still be there?

Thxs.

No, your good as long as you don't format the drive. But even still you might want to do a backup of your data to be on the safe side before you proceed.

If you can get that far then you can then just make a bootable USB drive and then restart under it.
