Although an old question (I'm new here) I had a problem like this come into our shop about 6 months ago.

It was not a malware/virus etc problem. Wasn't a PSU issue either. And the motherboard tested fine using a P.O.S.T. card and booting from an offline OS.

Add to that it would only go through repeated reboot after the unit had been running a while (10-20 minutes). Then the nightmare would occur.

Letting it sit a few hours it would start up fine and stay running for a while. (see above)

Turned out (after much head scratching) it was the power button on the front of the unit. The contacts were wore out. Once the unit warmed up it would cause the contacts to separate enough to cut power. Then in a matter of seconds they would cool enough to power back on. A few second later the boot/reboot fiasco would start all over again.

What I learned in the process was never overlook the most simple of things while assuming it may be something complex.

Replaced the switch (cost me $.49) and the customer was more than delighted to dish out $40 for the repair.

The first thing I would check for are viruses. Use AVG's rescue disk to scan it for viruses.

Try accessing safe mode with networking (tap f8 as soon as you power it up) and download Malwarebytes, which can be downloaded via www.download.com If your issue is related to a virus, this small easy to use application will get rid of it. If this application yields to zero infections, then it could be hardware related, and we will require more information on how it happens. Good luck

Besides your computer rebooting constantly i would differ to think its a malware issue. Just as it could be a hardware related issue or a corrupt system file, i always like to take things the easy way. What i would reccomend on doing without having to go throug so many steps to fix your computer is just simply reinstall your operating system. You should install windows 7, i dont know if you made a type-o but there is no such thing as windows 2999? Search google for a copy of Windows 7...cough cough *piratebay* If you always feel that you want to support microsoft then i suggest buying a real copy, that is if you want to spend a few extra bucks. Again if you are not up too this adventure then you could try getting the CD that your operating system is in and boot into recovery mode and that should fix your corrupted system files.

Remember guys i do not condone piracy, thank you

The tittle says Windows 2000. The 2999 more than likely a type-o. 99.9% of the computers running Windows 2000 will not have the system resources to run windows 7. Actually Windows 2000 is a very stable, small foot print operating system, no longer supported by Microsoft.

Agree with ABCellars on that one. I doubt that a PC that runs Windows 2000 will have the hardware resources to run Win 7 It sounds to me like faulty WIN drivers and errors in the setup. A fresh install could resolve this. The practice of software piracy should also not necessarily be advised. So if you want an OS that is free, get UBUNTU or any of the other free versions.

You can try repairing your windows by using your operating system disk or if problem still persist then you may need to go for a clean install. In case if you dont have the CD then you can install it by following steps:

Step 1- Download ISO image of Windows from: windows.microsoft.com/ website

Step 2: Download YUMI from: www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/ website?

Step 3- Plug in your USB in pc.

Step 4: Run YUMI and follow the on-screen instructions by selecting the appropriate operating system.

Step 5: Give path of the ISO Image and select the USB drive to make boot-able disc

Step 6- Plug in the USB onto the system on which you need to install the windows.

Step 7- Turn on the system.(Change the boot preferences to USB if the system do not automatically start booting from USB).

Step 8- follow the on screen instructions to complete the windows installation. Thanks
